surgery scheduled way off, afraid to eat

I had a CT and it showed that the contrast wasn't getting through a stricture, also a possible fistula, and an inflamed appendix. I was sent to the surgeon's office a couple of days later and both him and my GI said I needed it surgically taken care of in a week. Well, scheduling problems and now it wont be for a month. I'm afraid to eat anything, and don't see why they can't try another surgeon to speed it up. The nurse called my GI on vacation and he's supposed to call the surgeon about it. Just scared, worried and frustrated!

Hi Kim Did you ask them what your supposed to eat I haven't a clue but maybe soft . Sorry they didn't get you in earlier but if you get worse head for the hospital .Just trying to help here not scare you. I would be all the things your feeling too .Thoughts are with you. lol gail

I hope that your GI gets ahold of the surgeon soon. Until then possibly a liquid diet w/ ensure or something like that???? I'm new to this so there are much more informed people on this board. Hope that you get some information soon.

Hi Kim. I had the same thing happen to me. Nothing was getting through and even Ensure was sticking. The Dr. gave me no advice about eating, but I knew I couldn't. (I mean, if Ensure gets stuck, GEEZ!) I had nothing but sips of Gatorade and popsicles. I actually got the surgeon to bump me up a week on the schedule. For me, it was a good thing I did.
Keep bugging them, tell them you can't eat ANYTHING. Hopefully you can get in before a month. If things start to go bad, get to the hospital right away. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Well I guess on the bright side, if something gets stuck you will get that surgery real quick after an ER visit. Amazing that they didn't give you any advice. I am assuming emergency surgery is worse than scheduled surgery. Maybe baby food and broths and cream of wheat?

I know how you feel. I was in the same boat you are in about 3 months ago. I spend 18 days in the hospital before I have surgery. I was on TPN. it was not fun at all. good luck.

How about a clear liquid diet, clear broth soups, jello, popsciciles, teas, water.

I would seriously push for a different surgeon if he can't do it sooner. My Mom was having this problem, she couldn't eat without her gallbladder sending her to the ER (it was in really bad shape), and the surgeons couldn't even see her for 2 weeks, much less do the surgery sooner! So I got her in to my surgeon who not only saw her the next day, but had that sucker out the same week! I saw no reason for her to suffer, or have an emergency surgery just because of their scheduling problems!

If you have a complete blockage, nothing getting through, that's reason enough for emergency surgery. But believe me, you don't want to do emergency surgery if you don't have to, but if you're fully blocked, you can't wait that long for a surgeon to fit you in.

If you can pass fluids, it may be uncomfortable and scary to wait, but you can wait. There are a lot of full nutrition fluids out there, it's hard and not fun, but it can be done.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. My son, 10, was in the hospital with unknown stomach pain and vomiting yesterday and today (uh-oh?!!) and they called to tell me surgery was bumped up to Monday. Isn't that something like 'be careful what you wish for because you might get it!'. He'll be home tomorrow with no answers other than 'it's just a virus' and then I'll be in the hospital for at least a week with this resection. Liquids have been working for me so I'm sticking to them until the surgery.

Hi Kim You got your call really glad you don't have to wait a month I was thinking geewhiz on that one .The liquids are helping you that is good. Your little fellow is coming home bet he is glad how long was he in for? Glad things are looking up a little for you.lol gail

Glad that things are going better, am sorry to hear that your son was so sick. Hope that both of you get feeling better really soon.
