Has anyone had an obstruction that didnt show on cat scan?

I am having severe pain whenever I try to eat solid food and it is to the point where I can't hardly function. I am thankfully able to see my GI today. A cat scan was done at the ER Wednesday night and came back at that time negative for an obstruction. I was sent home on Percocet and Phenergran. Since I was weak and shaky on Thursday (this has been going on over a week) I ate a turkey sandwich and some food last night at dinner. The pain and bloating started again really bad around midnight and hasnt let up. I have been taking the Percocet and Phenegran both and it is not touching the pain. Is it possible to get an obstruction that fast? If the meds aren't helping what will they do next if there is no blockage and I can't eat or sleep hardly? The pain is to the right lower quadrant of and near the umblicus area (terminal ileum). I threw up once Wednesday morning. I had Remicade Sept 1st and am taking 175mg Imuran, 40 Nexium, B12 shot, Pentasa, Climara patch. Is there a med that will work immediately so I can function or is the only choice to go to the hospital and let them take over?

Thanks for your understanding. Sometimes it's like you know something is going on and are just trying to get answers. I am lucky to have a wonderful doctor that listens well. It feels like things are definitely having a hard time trying pass through and the pain has been pretty strong on straight liquids too.

When I have my SBFT done (even when I had my temp ostomy) it took about 3 hours before it would take 4 or more...dran slow moving GI system unless of course I am eating out...

If the pain gets to be more than you can handle and seems to come in waves like labor pains and you are unable to pass gas or have a BM you need to head to the ER now. Especially if you start throwing up too. Sure hope you get feeling better soon. Let us know how the GI visit goes.

Thanks I will. I haven't had a BM or or passed gas today. I have just been trying to stay hydrated. I ate solid food twice yesterday and am a little distended. I wil try to keep you posted. I feel like it may be a stricture and food is trying to pass through or something. I feel weak and shaky from not eating much since last Wed.

I can't speak from personal experience on obstructions, but I did get to attend a medical conference on Crohn's earlier this year.  And at the conference, one of the presenters talked a bit about how it IS possible for obstructions/strictures to be missed in CT scans, SBFT's, CT enterography, etc.  Some of them can be just a few millimeters long (small enough to be missed by radiography) but can significantly close off the bowel.

Yes, before I was dx, i had 3 ct scans and none of them showed my obstructions. Maybe the docs's weren't the brightest...lol I'm still wondering how they missed 3 obstructive points in my asending colon especially when they were the size of a softball.

Anyhow, I hope you get to feeling better real soon!!!

I have been having similar symtoms the past 5 months. I believe that it is a stricture that is causing it. It seems like it all starts with something that I eat. Peanuts, unpeeled cucumbers and apples. Things that I no longer eat. What happens is that my digestive system just becomes blocked.
I end up throwing up all night and not able to have a BM for awhile. The doctor has put me on the usual meds for the Crohn's flare up.

I had CT scans and SBFT's earlier. This time he scheduled a different type of test called Enteroclysis. Here is more information on it.

Does not sound like fun but it is suppose to give the better results than the previous tests.

I once had an obstruction and couldn't' get to the ER immediately. A friend suggested sipping warm water, then lying on my back and very gently massaging the affected area. By the time I was able to get the ER the next day , I had managed to pass very, very thin extremely black stool. Strictures along with inflammation can cause a lot of problems.Don't wait , especially if you have a fever and can't stop throwing up. Keep insisting on Dr's finding out what is causing this. It is not normal and needs to be seen to.
