my stool sample collection method worked well !

Hi all,

I have to do a C Diff test and since my mom works at a hospital she was able to bring me the 2 containers for the stool samples.  She read the instructions to me over the phone, I am one where I have to sit on a toilet to go...trouble with bed pans etc.  I went to the local dollar store and bought an aluminum pan that would sit inside the bowl and some cat litter pan liners.  I had to kind of mold the pan so it would fit under the seat.  The method worked though and because of the bag it was easy to dispose of the unused poop.  Granted I brought out the excess, aluminum pan and some additional bathroom trash I had right after.  I am glad I had gloves at home, I did get a little on the gloves but better than my fingers.

Now my sample is waiting in their respective containers and luckily dont have to go in the fridge cuz that would gross me out and my hubby even more.  Tomorrow I am going to meet her for lunch and drop off the sample and the order for the test.  How long does it typically take to get the results back?

The results should come back within a few days.

Whenever I've had to keep a sample chilled, I bought a cheap styrofoam cooler and put frozen bottles of water in there with it.

Also, I found that cheap plastic large spoon ladles work well for moving samples from the catcher into the containers. No fuss and can just throw away afterwards.

Also, they make upside down plastic stool catchers that can go in the toilet.

I had to do a 72 hour collection thing, and that was hard dealing with all that collecting.

Raise 4 kids and breed dogs for 30 years and you get quite adept at collecting and handling stool samples.

When I was raising my kids we didn't have disposable diapers. We had flannel diapers and gauze diapers and we had to change, clean and wash those diapers ourselves.

Now urine samples could be tricky .....

I worked as a vet assistant and dealt with animal stool samples on a daily basis but we dont use formalin in the samples...that is the odor that gagged me the most. I also have worked as a day care teacher for 7 children ages 18 mo - 2.5 yrs....many diapers changed each day. The sample containers had spoons attached to the lid like the ones at the animal hospital, however at the hospital like I said no formalin plus no stirring or sahking the samples...we used a centrifuge.

Hi When I had my stool ex.done they had to be refidgerated and one kind had to be frozen. So you should call the lab and ask. Not sure which one had to be frozen. Zip lock bags help with the keep it in the bag grossness.I also had to keep it cool on the way to lab. Best Wishes lol gail

I never had to refrigerate my samples. I was so embarrassed the first time to be carrying around bottles of poop. My husband works close to the lab so he would drop it off for me. I couldn't find a small enough bag to put it in so I used a gift bag. The next time I went into the lab for blood work the technician remembered the "present" I sent them. LOL

When I had to have the test for C-Diff my samples had to be chilled or frozen also. I think you best check with the lab.

Only problem with using the cat litter box liners is you start rubbing against people's leg and yowling over the back fence in mating season . . . but a small price to pay!

When I had to collect stool samples for a week straight, the lab gave me a paint can...really...a pain can and I put it in the toilet tank with the seat down and did my business, just kept it in the toilet as the cold water being in the porceline toilet kept it cold enough....luckily we have 3 bathrooms total so no one had to use the ensuite in my bedroom...it rusted the bowl a bit but was an easy clean up.

Darn stupid freaking pathology tech gave my mother the wrong containers, so I have to get another sample. I have to go to the local satalite location of the hospital anyway on monday for them to document the results of the ppd for my pre emploment physical. My day monday consists of poop, collect go to the office, drop off sample, go upstairs have ppd read....well at least I have a schedule lol I tend to have my first bought of D around 9:30 am if not I can kick start it by eating anything

I had to do four stool sample collections on Friday....yuck. The lab gave me a pan thing to sit on the back of the toilet seat which made it easier to collect the specimen w/out getting urine in it. Still, one of the grosser things I've had to do.

I'm having a colonoscopy done on Oct. 1. This will be my 2nd.: (
