Something I never knew...mercury poisoning and crohns...

Here's one of many links I found that link crohns, colitis and even IBS to mercury poisoning...I never knew this, did anyone eles ever hear of this?

This is pseudo-science bunk. Plain and simple. Don't believe everything you see on the internet.

Sorry for being so blunt but I get frustrated with psuedo-science.

I haven't checked the link, but saw the "dental" in the address. In that regard, I had CD before I ever got a filling. It reminds me of an occasion where an aquaintance told everyone that symptoms she was having was due to mercury poisoning. When I had the opportunity to ask her privately about her symptoms, this woman in her forties described symptoms that I was well-aquainted with--menopause! She had self-diagnosed by something she had read, not by being tested or anything. She also gave me a pamphlet that said Crohn's was caused by candida and could be cured by curing the candida. I felt like she was making a mountain out of a molehill for herself, and at the same time, belittling my incurable disease.

I'm a scientist and I just did a search of all of the scientific articles ever written and there's no study linking mercury poisoning to Crohn's disease, any form of IBD, or IBS. I would be careful with information gathered from google searches, because it's often inaccurate. Here's a link where you can search scientific articles http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez, which includes any articles that has ever been written in scientific journals. I was just reading a few months ago that the harmful effects of eating fish during pregnancy is just a myth with no data to support it. There's actually a lot of data now that eating fish is very beneficial for non-pregnant and pregnant individuals due to the beneficial effects of omega 3. It's rare for fish in the US to have high enough mercury levels to be damaging and most reports of mercury poisoning are based on fish from other countries (with more pollutants in the water), but you can look at the degree of mercury in fish and eat the ones with higher mercury not as often. Here's the fda's last report on levels of mercury in a variety of fish http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~frf/sea-mehg.html. As you can see, usually the levels range from undetectable to very low. I hope this was useful.

Well ther'se quite a bit on Mercury poisioning in the Medical books,.
There is a condition called Minamata disease,
a severe, degenerative, neurologic disorder caused by the ingestion of seed grain heated with alkyl compounds of mercury or of seafood taken from the waters polluted with industrial wastes contaminated by soluble mercuric salts. It is most often see in those Japanese who eat seafood from Minamata bay. mercury passes the placental barrier, causing the congenital form of the disease.
Symptoms may not appear for several weeks or months: they include paresthesia of the mouth and extremities, tunnel vision, difficulties with speech, hearing, muscular co-ordination, and concentration, weakness, emotional instabitity, and stupor.

Continued ingestion causes serious damage to the renal tubules and corrosion of the gastrointestinal tract.

When I was a kid, my dentist would give me little vials of mercury to take home to play with. I used to dump out the mercury on my nightstand, squish the ball of mercury with my fingers and then gather the little balls back up. By the time I was done playing with it, most of the mercury was probably in the carpet in my bedroom. Years later, when I discovered how toxic mercury is, I worried that I could have some lingering effects from the mercury exposure. Just one more of those things - what you don't know, CAN kill you!

Sorry. I didn't mean to imply that mercury is a safe substance. It definitely is not. The point I was making is that the levels of mercury in fish in the US is usually pretty negligible. Also, the effects during pregnancy have been primarily based on populations outside of the US with fish containing higher mercury levels. There are now a series of studies linking fish consumption during pregnancy to improved cognitive outcome in offspring. But, by no means would I want anyone to go out and expose themselves to mercury. Maybe just look at the link from my previous post, so you know how much mercury is actually in different fish.

I'd be surprised considering how low the rate of Crohn's disease is among Japanese, with their all fish all the time diet.

The big debate about mercury surrounds mercury used in amalgam dental fillings. I know lot of people who have been convinced that they need to have all their fillings removed and replaced with white resin fillings at the cost of 10s of $1000s.

Meanwhile, the real culprit in the mouth appears to be dental plaque and gum disease, which has been implicated in all sorts of health disorders/complications, including heart disease. The issue here is sourcing of materials we circulate here. There is so much junk science, hucksterism, and just plain trash floating around on the net it is really important to check the sources of these web pages. Who links to them? Who do they link to? This can tell you a lot about whether or not you can rely on the info.
