on a more serious note, I feel your pain. see if you can get a script for cortisone suppositories. they really help.

Um, I'm not sure I can stick anything up it... I've never done that before. Hmm. On the other hand, I'm miserable with the itch so maybe I can muster the courage and just do it. I'll call the nurse tomorrow.

(I said the same thing about not being able to give myself a shot and have been on Humira for 6 months now! Guess you just have to get over some things...)

hydrocortisone cream can help. I know it says not to do this on the package, but sometimes I put it on a q-tip and swab the outside area and just a tiny itty bit inside. Not like sticking the whole darn think in there like maybe 3 mm. Not even the whole tip lol. Just enough to get some cream where the sun dont shine. And if you push down a little like you are having a BM while you apply the cream you get it on parts that are normally hidden. Its gross. It sucks. But it works. Now as to why the package says not to use at all internally, I dont know.

I agree with dragonfly, my daughter had pinworms some years ago. Her butt was so itchy especially at night, so when I called the ped. he said "take a look at her butt, and you will see them moving", and I did!!! They look like white strings, and they move.  So everybody in the family had to take medication for that, and we had to be very careful with cleaning the toilet, changing bed linens etc.  If your husband is not so grossed out, have him check on it.

It's nothing serious, but it's very annoying.

I use a cream called Calmoseptine.  It's got a little bit of menthol in it, and it really kills the itching.  You'll need to ask your pharmacist to order it- most places don't stock it.

Calmoseptine is my current favorite as well. It works great for fissures, too. You don't need a prescription- but like bektold said, most places dont stock it. its not terribly expensive, either, i think it cost me like 5 bucks a tube or something. which, compared to my other medications, is very cheap indeed :D

...ewww the dogs rub their butt on the carpet to release anal gland fluid. It usually passes when they have a BM but some get impacted or infected. It is a fishy odor that is released from the anal glands. They are located in cats as well but dogs have more AG issues. If they dont need expressing make sure the vet doesnt start since that can cause a lifetime of medical expression of the glands necessary. I worked for a vet avd trust me it was one of the worst parts of the job having to stick ur finger in there and milk out the fluid...sometimes when afraid they just shoot them out....my cat actually shot them across the bed one night right while we were unmaking the bed to go to sleep....its gross

I started having that problem last year and my doctor and I also had a rash and my doctor gave me a script for zinc sulfate and I take it everyday and havn't had any problems as long as I keep taking this medicine.

i have this itch an its so bloody annoying had it before an it went away i recently changed my diet so thinking could be that dunno either way not good gonna phone doctors here an get something sorted will post up later an see what he prescribes :)

I had this as well, I found that it was often hemmies or things being swollen down there....try prep. H or I would take a bath and add a few drops of tea tree oil to help with inflammation! Hope this helps!

You should see your PCP and have them look at it. It could be fungus-really. It happened to someone I know and they needed a prescription. It has nothing to do with cleanliness. But he scratching will cause it to be worse.

The itchy anus can come from several causes:

1) Constant diarreah that irritates the area which may be always moist. The cottonelle wipes is perfect to keep it dry.

2) Hemorroids which are easily diagnosed

However, if you always itch, the area is so inflamed that it may be:

2) Perianal Crohns which is what I have been diagnosed. The skin has evolved into thick red lines of growth, clearly not irritated skin but one that has permanent inflammation. Try the Prax lotion, I suggest that you stay away from menthol (which relieved my symptoms, temporarily, but made the inflammation worse). The only permanent solution to Perianal Crohns are the biologics, currently I am on Entivio which has reduced the itch and scar lines by 50%.

Make sure that you see a Proctologist or Colorectal surgeon for this. The two Gastroenterologist were useless for this: One recommended that I put Corn Starch to keep it dry, the other one said it could be another disease Lichen Planus. It was not until I saw the Colorectal surgeon that he immediately diagnosed as Perianal Crohns. These colorectal surgeons hold the live intestines in their hands during surgery and understand what they are looking at. The GIs look at it from XRays and Colonoscopy scopes, one level removed from the actual living tissue. One dermatologist gave me hydrocortisone ointments which mildly helped but it was not until Prax that I found relief.

Crohns is a wicked disease: it travels through the years downward from the intestine to the colon, to the rectum and ends up in the anus. I even have the Scar lines about 1/2 inch into my outside regular butt tissue, I thought that Crohns will manifest itself only on the mucusa but no, it made its way outside of the anus mucosa into the normal skin. Crohns can also travel upward into the Jejunum and even the Esophagus. All of this happens after decades and decades of this disease. The anus is the final stop since it has no more body to extend itself to.

Here is a quick way to determine what you may have:

If you only have itching after a bowel movement but not during the rest of the day or night, you may only have an irritation caused by diarreah. The cotonelle wipes will help to keep this area clean.

If your itching is 24/7 like mine and you have a scar ring around the anus that itches like hell you may have Crohns in that area. It is not related to bowel movements.
