I had individual insurance for a couple of months and then they dropped me.  My husband's company insurance is too expensive.  Does anyone know of any individual insurance that will cover crohn's...does any even exist????

what was the reason for dropping you? What is the price to get on hubbies?

well..blue cross blue sheild stated that i answered some questions wrong and that if they knew that i was having intestinal problems beforehand they would not have covered me in the first place.  My husband's ins.  would cost somewhere around $250 a month just for me..I think....i'm going to look into it.  We live off of one income since i'm a stay at home mom....so finances are tight.  I'm currently getting assistance with my lialda...but i'm afraid of how i wil pay if i have to have emergency room visits, surgeries etc....

Chrissy- I understand that $250 sounds like a lot but it is probably cheaper than trying to get private insurance with crohns. Even if you were able to get it, they probably wouldn't cover your pre-existing condition. If you are low income you could look into federal or state insurance but otherwise I think your husbands plan is the way to go. Also, once you up to a family plan it is probably not much more to have your children covered. It would be a lot more expensive to get private insurance for you and your children. Also, you will probably get a tax break because your premiums through your husbands insurance will come from pre-tax dollars. It really sucks but it is a reality of living w/ crohns that medical insurance is a priority. You will save so much money in the long run by having the insurance, getting your medications, and taking care of yourself. Maybe you could get a fun part time job on the weekends to help cover the extra cost, or baby sit or dog sit during the week while you are home with your kids.

Check to see if your state has a medical pool for people with pre-existing conditions. I was able to get insurance through my state pool several years ago. It's worth at least a few questions to find out for sure. Good luck.

My daughter also has bcbs individual insurance, Im worried about
the same thing happening. her policy came effective on 1/07 and
was diag 7/07 w/crohn's...I think you should go w/your husband..
example: went to pick up my daughters 1st dose of humira/6-pens
ins cost $1600 w/o ins $5000, I was shocked......
Did you have problems before you got the ins, because my daughter did not? Good luck to you.

get on your hubbies......Mine is $200 a WEEK. $250 a month is well worth what it is going to cost you

i'm sorry....let me make a correction...my husband's ins. would cost about 250 a week...not a month.

concerned mom.....i did have symptoms before i applied for insurance. my doctor that i saw for that told me that he would not put anything on my medical record that would keep me from getting insurance...b/c at that point i had not been diagnosed with anything. but bcbs individual ins. will not cover anyone who has had colitis, intestinal problems, D, or anything related.....My current gi said this is the reason his office does not accept bcbs....b/c they have dropped so many people with crohn's. Has bcbs already collected your daughter's medical records and info from her doctors?

I got diagnosed the month after getting on my hubbys insurance. They tried to find a way to bump me but no diagnosis had been made and all the major testing occured after I got started with them. We pay 512 per month and it hurts but would rather pay that than all the doctor bills. They have also gotten very picky about what they will pay, now ER is not covered unless I am dying practically. Even if insurance is expensive, it is better than the alternative that can get very expensive fast.

thanks for all of your input. I know it's better to have insurance and i've been putting it off b/c ins. companies are such a pain. I think i'm going to get on my hubby's ins.
