sad  This is driving me crazy, I have hardly slept a wink since being on these darned Pred, My Doctor has given me Temazepam but said not to take them all the time if I can help it. Well if I dont take the max dose I get absolutely no sleep at all. Night after night I lie awake, I dont know what to do. I am on 20mg daily now, and am hopefully going to get them reduced  again after seeing the consultant on tuesday. mad

i am the same way! started on the 40mg, yesterday i tapered to 30mg, took vicodin for pain, trazodone for sleep and slept solid for 4 hours. that is the best i have done so far on steroids! usually i can't fall asleep or stay asleep but i also have sleep problems to begin with :/ maybe see if you can get some ambien for now. i also took the advice of people on this board to take them as early as possible.

I haven't been able to sleep since I was on Pred also, and I've been off for just over 2 months now. My doctor gave me an Rx for Ambien which I started 1 week ago. I'm sleeping now, and if I do wake up to use the bathroom I can go back to sleep quickly. I asked for and received the one that isn't time released because of poor absorption. Not sure how long I can continue taking it, he never said, but I'm not stopping until he makes me, lol.

as crohnie42 asked above, what time are u taking them? If u arent taking them as soon as u wake up that could be your prob, Pred makes me wired but because i take them at 6am, by the time i go to bed around midnight they have run their course. Also, if u you can, i would suggest u excercise as i found that took a lot of the bite out of the extra energy when i was on 40mg/day

I can't sleep either. I am on 30 now and I am still up most of the night. I came home from the hospital and felt so completely drained yet couldn't sleep more than a few hours a night. It is not a good way to regain strength. I finally resorted to Benadryl which gets me about four hours. Does anyone know if it is addictive or dangerous with other Chrohns' Meds. I was hoping that when I got down to 25 or 20 that it would improve but sounds like those of you on 20 have problems too. I have been taking half of my dosage of pred in the morning and half in the evening.

Thanks for all your replies and I am relieved to hear Im not the only one not sleeping!! I am taking the Pred 1st thing in the morning at 7am. I am not too familiar with some of the other meds you are all taking about because I presume you are mainly talking about meds you have in the USA, I am from England and not sure what else to do as my Doc has told me the max dose I can take of Temazepam is 20mg (that is a strong sleeping tablet).

Hello, This is Kitt.

Restoril® (temazepam) capsules, 7.5 mg, 15 mg, 22.5 mg, and 30 mg, are for oral administration. We used to give the 30 mg caps with a may repeat once in four hours for sleep in the hospital setting.

You may want to recheck with your physician on the dosing.  However your drugs may be different in strengh and the amount of medication available in the capsules.

While I was on steroids, I was in the same boat...little or no sleep. 10 mg of Ambien didn't even help. I'd be up most of the night reading or just on the verge of going crazy. I finally got an Rx for Klonopin and that was what started to help me get some rest, as well as finally being tapered off the steroids.

I have been a terrible sleeper all my life. Now with CD , MS symptoms, Restless legs syndrome, I still don't sleep. I am on Clonazepam, Celexa, Sulfasalazine, Pantasol, Tyleno #3 and Gravol, and still only get 2 hours of sleep at a time before pain, or having to pee, or nightmares, or restless legs, or having to poop, or headaches, or ...or...or ....or
I used to pray to God to take a little baseball bat and hit me over the head so I could sleep a couple of days ....a good sound sleep. The only time that has ever happened is when I was in hospital on Morphine and sleeping pills.
I guess this is why so many of us are at the computer at 3 am.

I have to agree with the last post.  Why are we on here at 3 A.M. again???  Prednizone for me right now- 40 mg.  Take it in the morning.  Supposed to get Lunesta to aid with sleeping tommorrow.  Don't know if you have access to it or not.  Similar to Ambien they say.  Good Luck.

i hope you get some relief. im on 40 mgs pred now and i hardly sleep at all, its been 4 months, and ive tried everytihng either this time or when i was on pred in the past. ambien, lunesta, trazadone, vistoril and i dont know what else. right now they gave me rozerem and that helps but i still only get 4-5 solid hours. my doc says if this doesnt work then ill just have to deal with it casue shes not prescribing me anything else. grrrr

so i know how you feel and i do hope you get some sleep

I think that you won't sleep much if you are on high doses of Prednisone. I have so far refused prednisone because of that. I was going through withdrawals from entocort and put on a new med and they gave me 15 mg of temazepham and i still take it when I need a good night's sleep.  Don't be afraid of it, my GOSH you have to sleep.  It must be impossible with another drug purposely keeping you up. I took it one time and felt like I was on crack.  Will never take again.  I would just take temazepham before bed and then when you awake, take a second one? It can't hurt for a little while until you can lower your prednisone, I would think.

Thanks for all your helpful replies, My doc has said I can reduce down to 15mg of Pred, and then she says reduce a further 5mg per week till I am on 5mg then stay on 5mg for 2 weeks then I will be off them!! I am tempted to go down 10mg per week to get off them quicker. Last week my GP reduced my dose from 30mg to 20mg which is what I am currently on and I didn't have any probs... any ideas from anyone on here.

I would suggest you start taking all of it in the morning, i guarantee that half dose in the evening is the exact root of your sleep problems

Hi,

Definately been there done that.  When I was on high doses of prednisone out of the hospital I stayed up for over 48 hours, wide awake and getting very naurotic thoughts.  Called my doc. he RXed ativan (lorazapan???) it worked wonderfully...deep sleep, no dreams.  Unfortunately after I was off the pred. they won't give me Ativan anymore so it must be controlled or something.  I take Ambien now for my sleep with Fibromaylgia.  It helps fall asleep but I still wake up through the night and dream constantly, so I am sooo tired when I wake up.  I hate mornings!

Be careful with Trazadone.  I took it for awhile for Fibro, after a time I noticed I was choking on my food alot.  Read up on the side effects....yep choking on food is one of them.  I won't take Trazadone anymore.

I got hyper active, close to adhd,


worked for 14 hours

fell asleep like someone had thrown a stone in my head...and slept for 8 hours....
