When your colon is overactive as with D, you can get spasms as it tries to empty itself, even when there is nothing there to empty. Pretty common in all bowel conditions. Basically like dry heaving at the other end.

I have it all the time. I finally broke down and asked for pain meds. I believe it is the muscle continuing to contract - because you were pushing for a while.
One person on this sight suggested squeeaing for 10 seconds and release - repeat until it feels better. This did help me, but sometimes mine just cant be helped.
Good luck.

I call it my charlie ass...charlie horse in the butt. I just do the maternity breathing thing and writhe a little until it goes away. I did find that stretching through my whole body and staying flexible helps the overall feeling too.

I've had that too. My dr. told me it was rectal spasms. Not much you can do but ride it out. I've had them while I was just sitting in a chair watching tv. My uncle used to make fun of me, until the fates gave him one, wasn't so funny then

Sounds like spasms. Mine are more in the rectum and colon. So uncomfortable.
I find chamomile and tylenol helps.

Definitely spasms and inflammation, the results of straining on the throne. If you check afterwards, you'll probably find that it's swollen around your rectum, too. And if you're really unlucky, you may also get chafed. Topical painkillers help to get you through that first half an hour.

I've always described it as dry heaving like MikeB... Never thought of it as throbbing. Been meaning to ask the GI but miraculously I always feel good a week or two leading up to my checkups and I don't think about
it at the office.
