Whats the SBFT like???

Hi guys...

Haven't been here for a while and whatever sort of IBD I have is mild. I am going to have a SBFT soon tho. My GI wants to see if I have any inflammation to support the Crohn's theory.

Anyhow.. I just finished reading the instructions that were sent to me for the prep. and x-ray. It said that it could take a real long time.. like 4-6 hours!!!

Was hoping someone could explain what its like... Those instructions have me kinda nervous. I hate the prep, and I know I have to drink barrium (ewwww).

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

 

When I have had SBFT's I have NEVER had to do a prep. I just had nothing by mouth after midnight. You drink 2 glasses of barium and about every 15 min they take a xray until the barium moves thru your system. Drink lots of water afterwards, sometimes you might need to take Milk of Magnesia to help it move out.

yeah never had to do prep...my record 1/2 hour from 1st xray

No prep for me either...nothing after midnight...then the barium drinks the next day. It took all morning and well into the afternoon for me. I had strictures , and I've always been more Constipated with my crohns than diarhetic so it took forever for the barium to make its way through. Mind you once it got past the strictures and got started , it gave me a real "run for my money".
Do drink lots of water after you get home. And don't freak at seeing white poops ...they come with the territory.
I think from beginning to end I was at the hospital for a good 5 hours.

To add to Habs post, I always ask for a wet washcloth so that after every drink I can wipe my mouth and tongue.  It actually helps.

Mine was thick and white and chalky. While drinking one I got to look at the other waiting for me to drink it too. I had to drink these in the ladies changing room with one other woman waiting for her xray. She looked very uncomfortable as I grimaced with every gulp. She probably thought I was going to barf.

Yeah, the stuff is nasty, but I'm usually so freaking hungry by the time they give it to me, it's never as bad as I remember....... I hold my nose and chug while walking. I try and get it down as fast as I can. Yeah, the more you walk the fast it moves thru.... walk walk walk.

Definatley after drink drink drink, if not you'll have white cement poo for a week!

Once I had a SBFT immediately following a colonoscopy..... now that was bad. Still woozy from all the drugs and having to drink that stuff. Needless to say, it didn't stay down long! Ick!

Thank you all for your replies... I am so NOT looking forward to this. I read the letter again and it says prep! Think I am going to give them a call just to make sure... The prep is the worst part for me.

Piasava- what do you mean by "crohn's theory?" I'm curious to know your situation, how you were diagnosed, etc

Was diagnosed by colonscopy last summer. They found diverticulas as well as scattered ulcers thru the whole colon, but since I had no bowel problems what so ever before this I was diagnosed with infectious colitis. Three months later I was still having small problems (running to the bathroom 4-5 times a day, but with no pain or blood), so they decided to put me on Asacol. In the meantime, I developed hypothyroidism leading to constipation, so I took myself off the Asacol. I am still going anywhere between 2-5 times a day. I guess I have a mild case, because I don't relate to alot of the problems that are discussed on the boards. I have never bled or had pain with my bm's. I have pain in my URQ, and sometimes I have sharp but mild pains in the middle of my stomach.
