I edited out the article itself, because it's very long and uses a lot of expensive server space to store and reproduce. If we're to keep this site free, we need to be as economical with server space as we can.

I can't vote because I've never been on remicade, but I believe I've developed a new fistula and I'm afraid I'll be put on it.  I've struggled for the last year to lose 60 and I have 40 more.  Now I don't know what to do.

Wow, that's interesting. I've had 7 infusions to date. I haven't notice any weight gain as yet, but I had put on some weight before I started. I've struggled with being too skinny my whole life and being able to put on some weight (although not 60-75 lbs!) would be welcome. I'm pretty happy with my weight right now - except I wish I could move it to some more desirable places!

Maybe the positive reaction to remicade that many patients get results in better absorption, which leads to weight gain.

Very interesting.  My 9 year old son has been on Remicade for 2 years now.  He started out at 60 lbs and as of lasts week treatment he is 106lbs.  I asked his GI about Remicade and weight gain at his last visit and he said it wasn't from the Remicade.  My son is very active, playing tackle football right now.  Practices 3xs a week with games on Saturday.  Outside playing all day when not in school.  I will definately bring this up at his next treatment.

I just think it is simply because we are better. No scientific study needed. We feel better, so we eat. Most who need radical treatment are very underweight. I know I was.

I have been on remicade for 3 + years and I have lost 30+ pounds the last  3-4 months and no one can explain. I also have GERD real bad...had part of my insides taken out...doctors dont seem to care, I cannot wear my watch or wedding ring. My pants size is down 4 sizes, I wasnt even a 32 in Jr High..docs do not no why ....

Wow, very interesting....I gained some weight when I first started Remicade, then went off of it during my pregnancy. I lost all the baby weight within a few weeks of giving birth, but then gained it all back plus some, and I could not figure out why for the life of me....I guess Remicade could have been the reason! Thankfully I've now lost 63 pounds in the last 9 months, not so thankfully though, because I've been so sick!

I've been on Remicade since 2002. I've definitely gained more than 25 lbs., but I was down 40 lbs. before doctors decided to try Remicade. The last few years, my weight has been up and now but not to the extremes. I'm not sure how I feel about this report, but I'll latch on to any excuse for weight gain...

Almost three years on Remicade [27 infusions] and I LOST 43 pounds during that time. No one could explain the weight noss. I was eating a better, more balanced diet than prior to Remicade because my gut went into remission after the 3rd infusion.

Interesting. I just switched over to HUMIRA and have started gaining weight. I am also constantly hungry!

I gained a ton of weight, but I honestly think it was because I felt so much better so I ate anything I wanted! =)

But heck, I'll blame it on the medication. I'm on Humira now and am trying to keep the weight that I lost while sick off.

I was on remicade for 12 months. Gained about 10 pound that year. When I was forced to go on Humira, well, been on it for 6 months and have gained 20 pounds. Doc checked my diet and exercise..all OK. No reason for gain. I say Humira. Never got an infection on remicade, but now have one on Humira. Miss remicade.

I have been on remicade for aproximately 6 months now. I weighed in at 210 before and am at 256 now. I cannot attribute my weight gain to anything else. My appetite and diet are the same as always, and my Crohns symptoms aren't any different either. I have had Crohn's now for 4 years, have been on Humira and failed that drug, and now have failed Remicade, next stop is Cimzia (sp)....

Kitro,

Why did you stop the Remicade?  I think the weight gain people are experiencing is because they are getting better on the Remicade and therefore can eat again.  When you don't eat for a long long time and then are able to eat again you will gain a lot of weight.  That is why people who go on diets that restrict eating gain so much when they get off the diet.

Hopefully the new drug will work for you.  Remicade worked for me but after my bowel resection I stopped the Remicade.  My chrons is in remission.

My sister-in-law tried Humera and got infections, she is now on the new drug and doing very well.

I usually gain about 10 -14lbs after having it. But then in a flare I lose about the same! I probably gain about 6lbs in the first week but I think thats because whenever I've had it I've been dehydrated etc and so I reckon at least half of the total gain is water-weight and regained muscle and then the rest is down to me feeling better and being able to eat more and absorb the nutrients better.
