Hi.I'm new here,Iv'e had IBD for about eight years now,was just on Asacol,but then my scopes started showing more inflammation,last year started Imuran and the inflammation has really decreased,but my GI just put me on Humira because he wants to "balloon" a small stricture,a Pediatrician that I work with also has been on it and she says it's the wonder drug,but the injections REALLY HURT,does anybody have any suggestions on how to cut down on the pain,I use t he pen,and I actually don't do it,my nurse friends do (haha),soon after the injection,it stops hurting,but druring is sooo painful,any info out there?? Besides the pain,it's still much better than the side effects that I had on Prednisone!! Thanks :-)

I don't use it, but others on here who do say that using a regular needle and/or icing the area first may help. Good luck, I'm not sure I could give myself a shot either, lol.

i just got my first dose of Humira last Tues. by my GI. Four shots in the stomach area >.< yea, that hurt. I was using the injection needl. as opposed to the pen though. The needle itself really didn't hurt, other than the initial ping, there's a needle in you, but as she injected it, it STUNG sooo bad, lake an evil fire worm that decided to wiggle on my tummy. I'm not sure if they let the shots sit for a bit to warm up to room temp or if they shot it right from the fridge, as i hear that can make a difference. But i tell ya, if it's going to feel like that every time, i'm worried i won't be able to do it to myself.

i'm a wuss :(

I'm a wuss too,I get the other two shots this Sunday,so I'll let ya know if it was as bad,but boy did you describe it to a tee!! I got the shots in my legs and it felt exactly like you said!! I can give other people shots,but not to myself,the doctor I work with can't either! I will try to keep it at room temp for a while,then do it,aggghhh!!! So,after Sunday,"just" one every two weeks,the four definately was horrible!!! tongue

in a long post a few weeks ago we seemed to find that shots are less painful than the pen. I really don't find them to hurt much at all. I tiny sting, but not much. my nurse recommended no ice and to leave it out of the fridge about 20 minutes. I think doing the shot myself helps, too.

I agree with yogaprof the pens hurt worse I tryed the pen one time and I told my Rheumy that I wanted back my needle because it was less painful.It does sting some what but it only last for a few secounds and I do get a little red around the injection site but other than that I'm ok.

Try the upper and outer portion of your thigh. After icing...the pen hurt less for me. Took me several injections to figure this out. I'm not sure if I'm correct or not but if you think about having your finger pricked it hurts less on the side too because there are less nerve endings & blood vessels there. I wonder if possibly the same is true with the upper/outer thigh. Haven't really looked at an anatomy/vessel picture to see if the hypothesis has any merit.

How big are those needles anway are they anything like when you get a TB needle? How much meds are in the needle and how long does it take to inject ? Hope you do good with your next injections maybe when you only have to take one you will be able to do it yourself a lot of people seem to give themselves one after getting used to the needles. Thanks!! The needles are small and the med is only o.8cc,so not much,I give that much to little babies at work!! But this stuff stings soooo bad,I'll let you guys know,I have the second series tomorrow sad   If this stuff doesn't work,I'll be sooo pissed!!! tongue
