Breast implant's and crohn's !!!!

I would like some feedback......My daughter is wanting to get this surgery.....

She has talked to two surgeons and told them she has crohn's, which she is

not in remission yet....Going to get a 2nd opinion from another GI, before

starting Humira....at that appt I will bring up the breast surgery...

It scares me......One surgeon said she must get a medical release/clearence from

her DR.  Remember she is 19 and only had CD since July  !!!!!

Help!!!

I would think these surgeons won't touch her unless she is off the meds. Prednisone can delay her healing and may cause complications. And while I'm not sure about the Humira mechanisms, I'm sure surgery is contraindicated?

I'm 26, but when I was 19, I went through a phase when I wanted implants too. I went for a consult, and the surgeon told me that the Imuran I was taking may require me to need extra blood. That kind of grossed me out!

I ended up not going through with it. I can't imagine it being a good decision, especially if she's on the prednisone/Humira. This surgery is purely elective, and I don't see the need for extra risks. There's so many things that you have to worry about when you have surgery.

I would try to talk her out of it. That's just my opinion. I'm glad that someone talked me out of it. Crohn's has given me too many reasons to worry - I couldn't imagine having to worry about having implants.

On another note - totally off subject..... I'd tell her to wait for the implants if she wants to have kids. I just had a baby and breastfed, and I am thankful that I didn't have implants to contribute to sagging! If I did want them, I definitely wait until after I have kids.

At 19 she may not be done growing.  I put on about a cup and a half between 19 and 21.  If she hits a growth spurt she could end up a lot bigger than she wants to be.

ditto!! I grew a cup size at 20, senior year of college. Also, many women grow when go on birth control. As her to wait until 21... tell her all these "experts" weren't done growing yet.

I know that you are very concerned about this.I don't think it's a good idear at least not untill she has gone in remission.I am saying this because I have inplants.I got mine about ten years before being diagnosed with crohns.When you have crohns and on meds to treat this and then you have this done it puts your body up under even more stress.There are a couple of way's that they do depending on the person and what they are wanting like some women want inplants and a breast lift as well.When this you are cut on the bottom end of your breast and then they cut you from bottom up to the nipple.But if some one is wanting breast inplants with out a breast lift then they can make an inscition in her nipple and incert them that way or they can go in under her underarm.The last two are less avasive then the first's choice.But when you immune system is all ready weaken and then have this done will make it harder for your daughter to hill.If you would like to talk more please e-mail me and I will be glade to help you in any way that I can.

Thank you everyone for replying. W/this I have a few more ?'s to ask the GI DR......I think she
has to hear it from her Dr if it's not safe, because the surgeons will perform it regardless......
This is something that she has always wanted and she has been thru alot for the past 2 yrs
even before CD diag.....She says this is the only thing that she has to look forward to......
Both surgeons would put it thru her armpit.....It's all very scary for me, just dealing w/the
CD has been alot......

I can't speak for the whole male half of society, but as a definitely heterosexual male may I say this: I find breast implants to be just plain ugly. I never understood why anyone sees them as attractive. Lots of women seem convinced that men just die to see size DDD breasts - I can assure you that many of us find it revolting. I suppose that small implants might make sense for a woman who lost her breasts due to cancer, but for the vast majority of women this operation will only hurt their looks.

Concerned Mom, I hope you can talk your daughter out of it.

I would tell your daughter that you aren't taking this away from her if it is really important to her.  Tell her you guys are "postponing" it.  I don't think that it would be medically wise for her to do it until she is in remission.  Once she gets into remission and with the doctors OK.  Go for it!  =0)

I can feel her pain.  It's not fair and it's the one thing that you are hoping for that will make things seem like they're livable cause everything else is so crappy.  But if she's not in remission and she gets complications, not only will her bottom hurt but so will her boobs and armpits.  I got a breast reduction when I was 25 and was in perfect health and it still took a little for me to get back to normal.  Tell her that she's not giving it up, she's just postponing.....

p.s.  II your boobs do get bigger as you get older.  They definately got bigger between 19 and 21 and even bigger when I was 25 and I was a size 7.  I realize not all bodies are the same but there you go.

Concerned Mom, please try and read my reply to Dana_1974, under the topic "breast implants and Crohn's", I gave a list of 5 things that you might want to consider before getting them.  This list might be helpful to you.

The other thing I would like to mention is that I think she is too young and should really only consider it only after she has had children.

Good luck to you in advising her, and hopefully the doctors that you talk to you will also mention that she is too young.
