What ever insurance company carried the plan at your husband's job should offer those currently covered the option to go on a COBRA plan. Unfortunately, sometimes COBRA plans can be very expensive.
First, call the office that handled the insurance for the employees to make sure that coverage is not going to be extended for a certain period of time. If that is not an option, then call the insurance company direct and ask about a continuation of coverage policy. While you have them on the phone make sure you ask for a certificate of coverage for every person in your house that was covered under the plan. This certificate will insure that you cannot be denied by another company in regards to pre-existing conditions.
Check you particular state for insurance offered to those without coverage. Each state has differing amounts of coverage and qualifying factors.
We have some insurance gurus here that surely will have better ideas than mine. I just want to make sure that you ask for that certificate of coverage because it will prevent problems down the line.
