anyone had a colonocopy without pain meds???

I posted earlier that I get my Colonoscopies without sedation because I can't tolerate any of the meds.  I forgot to add one thing.... My GI uses a "Pediatric" scope that is somewhat smaller in size and is used for children. It is just as long, but more narrow. It is much easier to tolerate and you still see the same thing!  My GI is also very gentle.  I do tolerate it very well.  Hope this helps.  Julie :-)

My 78-year-old mother told me she has had two colonoscopy's (recommended because she's a breast cancer patient.) The first one she had the drug Versed. She said it was terrible that she was nauseated and her equilbrium was off for about a week. She asked to be unsedated for the second one. The doctor (thinking that everyone is a natural wimp,) told her that she may be uncomforable. Mom said "If I can have four children w/o drugs, I'm sure I can endure this." She said that it was a bit uncomfortable for a few seconds when they pump air into your colon, but if you just wait it out that it passes. It wasn't the most pleasant experience she's ever had of course, but she said it was totally bearable and if she had to do it again she would definately NOT be sedated. Both screenings showed no polyps or problems.
I'm 49 now and of course all of my doctors are starting to bug me about it, (for every person they send, they get a 400.00 kickback,) I told them sure, I'll do it, but I want to be WIDE awake for it, I do not want any drugs or I'm not doing it.....they're all "thinking about it." I can't believe what a society of wussies we've become over the years!!!

My aunt had one without anything and said it was rough. I had mine under general anesthesia I couldn't imagine not doing it that way. Afterwards my throat and bum were so sore I had to get a pain shot!
