what do you take for headaches?

i miss my advil -immensely-. tylenol doesn't even touch my headaches, even if i push it and take 3 out of frustration. so what can us crohnies take and tolerate?

i take excedrin migraine!! it works for me. and if it doesnt i sleep. =) hope it helps

Stephanie, how bad are your headaches? If they are migraines, I've found Imatrex works like a charm.

Never underestimate the power of good ol' ice.  A cold pack can work wonders on headaches. 

Excedrin products contain acetominophen but also aspirin and caffeine, both of which can cause a number on the guts, so just keep that in mind.

When 3 tylenol won't touch it, my gi gave me darvocet to take.

for the most part I put one of those rice/buckwheat microwavable thingies around my neck or make myself sleep it off but last Wed I had one so painful I couldn't take it anymore so I went to the ER and got a toradol shot.  I called the GI on call at work (not supposed to for personal stuff but what the hey) and he said as long as I didn't do it all the time, it shouldn't send my gut into a flare.  It's basically a non narcotic injection into your butt/hip muscle so it doesn't go through your tum tum.  Took about 40 min to kick in and I've been good since. 

Sarita, where do you put the ice????  I'm willing to try anything.  =0)

Depends on the headache, but I usually go for ice on the neck or on the forehead.  Wherever it hurts most :) When I get those searing, blinding, projectile-vomiting migraines, I wish I could just dump my head in a bucket of ice (probably not the best idea).  I get those like once a month and they are more miserable than anything I could ever imagine.  Ugh!  Maybe I should follow your example and get a Toradol shot next time!  Did it make you all loopy and crazy?

No it didn't make me loopy and crazy.  =0)  I have done it in the past with those type of headaches.  What I like about it is that it is a non narcotic so I don't get that nauseus constipated side effect like I would if I got demerol or percacet or oxycontin.  I have never tried imitrex or darvocet.

Ok, so I know they say not to take Advil, but I do anyway.  Here's what I do for my migraines (Imitrex does not work for me):

First I take 4 Advil

if no or only mild relief after two hours, 2 Extra Strength Tylenol with a diet soda with caffeine

if still no or only mild relief then 4 more Advil

If necessary, 2 Extra Strength Tylenol after two more hours

Usually I get relief by then.

I've had migraines for years until I turned 45 or so...then they suddenly almost disappeared. The only thing that worked for me when I had them was a trip to the ER for a shot of Demerol or Morphine and stemetil or gravol.
Now when I get one , I try take 2 Tylenol #1's (which in Canada you can ask the pharmacist for without a prescription), and one extra strength Advil with a bit of food. An ice pack on my head and off to bed...that usually does the trick.
Good luck....I know how debilitating they can be having lived with migraines , 2 or 3 a week for years.

For regular headaches I take Tylenol. If it gets worse I try icing my head. If it turns in to a migraine my doctor has given me some vicoden. Otherwise I'll end up in the ER. My migraines always last 3 days and the pain is just unbearable. Nowdays I take a Tylenol at the first sign of a headache, in hopes that it will catch it before it gets worse. Because I know Tylenol sometimes is like taking nothing at all!

thank you so much everybody for the suggestions! i have run of the mill type headaches but sometime they last for a few days, i don't think i would call them migraines? they are the kind where you think they are gone and you either get up fast, cough or even laugh and your head starts throbbing again. maybe i will ask my gi when i see him next week. i know i have taken vicodin for pain and also had a headache and it didn't do anything for the headache :/

Well there are all different kind of headaches out there, so I think it's a really good idea to ask your doctor and maybe they can figure out what kind you have going on. Sounds pretty painful if vicodin didn't touch it!

Luckliy I don't suffer with migrains, but when I occassionaly feel a regular headache coming on believe it or not but sex cures it for me...hubby's a lucky guy eh, instead of "not tonight dear I have a headache" he here's the opposite (of course that's not the only time he gets lucky LOL!)
