CT Entercolysis- Need info

Has anyone had this procedure done and what can you tell me about it.  Prep, sedation, pain etc?  My gi wants me to have one done so we can determine how much of my small intestine is affected and then will most likely have a surgical consult.

Hi I did not have it done but did look it up. It is better then the enteroclysis for looking at the small bowel and detecting CD in the small bowel as well as fis, abc. so it sounds like an effective DX tool.lol gail

I have had this done 3 times. It is very easy. I had it done in three different facilities and two were the same prep. So i am thinking that it is the common of the two that I have had.
What I had to do was have nothing to eat from midnight on, drink 3 bottles of an oral contrast called Volumen. It is one bottle every 20 minutes and then you are scanned about 10-15 minutes after the third bottle. It is a little hard to get the 3 bottles done but well worth it. It did give me D for the day it goes in white and runny and comes out the same. It also has a real fake sweet taste to it so the third is hard to get down. Some places will give you a shot of glucogon (?sp) to slow the bowel down this goes under the skin (like a TB test). You also have to have IV contrast. Usually Omnipaque this will make you feel real warm all over give you a metalic taste in your mouth and make you feel like you are peeing your pants. You won't but it sure feels that way. You will need to drink plenty of fluids after the test to help rid your body of the IV contrast and the oral. The IV gets filtered out by you kidneys.
This test will show the small bowel real well. This how my fistula was found and it also shows the extent of the damage from the CD. It will also show all of your other organs. The scan images the body from the base of the lungs thru the pelvic area. It is also amazing the 3D reconstructions that can be done with this info as well.
I was very happy with the amount of information that the scan was able to show. From what I have seen and what I have had done this is a very easy very useful exam!

the directions that the doc gave me include a mag citrate prep the day before. IV sedation and an ng tube placed for them to infuse barium into the small intestine.

That is the old way of doing the enteroclysis. Yucky, but it should still give good results. Many facilities are moving to the new procedure, as described by April. Much less invasive -- no NG tube etc.

I had the enteroclysis done at the end of Sept. I was a bit nervous before the test because I heard that they used the NG Tube. I didn't have to do any prepping at home before the test. The morning of the test while on the xray table, I inhaled some medication to numb my throat. They then gave me a mild sedative to take the edge off, as the tech put it. They injected the contrast through the NG Tube so I didn't have to drink any of it. I didn't feel any of it because I really didn't know what was going on. The test was nothing like I had been fretting about. It's not bad at all.

Ok, so I had my entercolysis w/ CT a couple of weeks ago.  First off, I had to do the bowel prep just like for a colonoscopy, then nothing to eat or drink after midnight.  When I got to the hospital, they started and IV, sprayed some liquid up my nose that I then had swallow to numb up my throat.  It wasn't that bad, just felt like I had a big lump in my throat.  After that they gave me versed for sedation and fentanyl for any pain. After I was sedated, they put the NG tube down my nose and into my small intestine.  I had to lay they while they infused 2 liters of water and contrast dye.  When the infusion was about half way done, I started to wake up out of the sedation.  They moved me to a cart and transported me to the CT scanner.  By this time, I could tell that my insides were getting 'full' of the liquid that they were putting in, but it was tolerable.  They slid me into the CT scanner and did their pictures which took less than five minutes.  By this time, I was pretty awake and they removed the NG tube.  It felt weird but didn't hurt, and my throat was still kind of numb so I didn't gag or choke.  They assisted me to the bathroom for a "blow-out" of all of the fluid they had put in and I was good to go home.  I must say my colonoscopy was easier, they did propophol and I was completely out until I woke up in the recovery room.  Overall though the entercolysis was very tolerable.

Also, they told me clear liquids on the day before, I am assuming that I can have jello as long as its not red.
