I am scheduled for an Endocopy next week. I am really nervous. I've had a colonoscopy before and I'm wondering if anyone knows if I will be put to sleep like I was with the colonoscopy. Im really creeped out about being awake while they shove a tube down my throat. Im even contemplating whether or not I should cancel it.

don't cancel it! it's not bad at all! it only lasts about 10 minutes. they gave me the same drugs they did for the colonoscopy and it seemed to go very fast. my morbid curiousity made me keep my eyes open and watch most of it though. i could have just laid back with my eyes closed and "drifted off". much much easier than the colonoscopy imo :)

I just had another colonoscopy yesterday. they use the same drugs to knock you out for your endoscopy, whichi had a few months ago...i didn't have an option of "keeping my eyes open", i was out like a light! the drugs they give you are amnesiacs, meaning you won't remember a thing. Take a nice nap! Being knocked out is great! No reason to be afraid, you won't remember anything.

yeah i've had it twice and i don't remember anything, it's the same as the colonscopy....the first time i had a sore throat afterwards for about a day but the second time i was fine.

about 10 days I ago I had a small bowel enteroscopy, which is a a glorified endoscopy in which they shove the scope down into your jejunum (it normally goes only to the distal duodenum; this one went quite a bit further).  Like everyone else, I was totally out.  It is super easy.  They have to give you enough anesthesia to suppress your gag reflex, which is more than enough to keep you a'snoozin' through the whole procedure.

I've had 4 endoscopies. Dani, it's not too bad at all. In 2 of them, I don't remember a thing. In the 2 others, I was only partly sedated and I have very vague memories of seeing the inside of my stomach on the screen. If you're really stressed about it, let the nurses know when you show up for your procedure, and they can give you something to calm you down before you get started.

It's a quick procedure, and worst case, you'll feel a tiny bit of gagging for about 2 seconds as the scope goes down. But most likely you won't feel a thing.

I think it's way easier than colonoscopy, just because you don't have to do the prep!

My experience was really easy, too.  I remember gagging for a second or two, and someone- either the doctor or the nurse, I'm not sure which- told me to relax.  I did and the gagging passed (I think we're pretty suggestable in that state), and the next thing I knew we were done and I was waiting for the stuff to wear off enough to go home.  A friend took me for the exam, and she found me very entertaining on the way home.  Apparently, I was quite happy.  tongue

I've had two endoscopies and don't remember anything from the procedures. I did tell my doc to give me lots of sedation..I was groggy afterward, but no pain...definitely worth doing the procedure to get the info you need. Good luck

Hi there!

Have you had your endoscopy yet?  I just had my first one ever today!  Honestly it was not bad at all!  The doctor gave me some stuff to numb my throat and then they put drugs into my IV to put me to sleep and honestly, I remember nothing about it!  The next thing I knew I was back in the recovery room waking up. 

The doctor said I could have a sore throat and my throat actually does not hurt. 

I was really REALLY scared going in but I am so glad I did!  I promise it is not bad at all!

I have never remembered anything with any of my colonoscopies or endoscopies. They are not bad and they can tell your doctors a lot. Don't cancel your doctors wouldn't have scheduled it if they didn't think you needed it.
