Hi guys.  How do you know when to go to the doctor or just see if the pain passes?  I have crohn's in my small intestine and can not seem to have any stool at all pass for about 4 days. (very little) now I can't keep food down and have pain in my left side under my rib cage.  I just feel general yuckiness with heart palpitaions but no fever as I can tell.  I just hate to go to the doctor and be made to feel like I am waisting their time.  Any help is appreciated.

Are you able to pass any gas at all? If no stool and no gas is passing and your pain comes in waves like labor pains, then you need to head to the ER. With not being able to keep food down I am a little concerned that it might be an obstruction. At least call your doctor or go to the ER. Good luck and keep us posted.

It sounds like you may be constipated I would definitly call the GIs office and inform them of what you just told us. Left side pain in a non IBD person typically means constipation sometimes in a patient with IBD it also means C but I would not let this go. The GI may suggest some OTC meds such as stool softeners, miralax or even a suppository or enema but the fact that you cannot keep anything down worries me. If you cannot reach an on call doc at this hour call your primary doc or go to the ER sounds like some tests may be in order being that you cant keep anything down as far as food. If you cannot keep fluids down that is more of an issue try to keep your intake of fluids up, non carbonated prefferably no caffeine either. Your best bet for fluids is water, sports drinks, and decaf tea. But before anything call the doc if they want say a CT done for example asap you cannot have anything by mouth for a set number of hours prior to the test except the CT drink.

Thanks guys.  I do tend to have C over D due to the crohn's being in my small bowel so I am used to that.  My main concern right now is that I have taken several laxatives over the last couple of days with only one very small, very thin amount of stool as a result.  Also I keep having these heart palpitations that some how feel related to this.  Thank good you are all here because WHO else could I tell all of this too!  THANK YOU!  I will see if I get better or worse by tonight.  My doc never takes same day appointments and always makes me go to the ER, it drives me crazy!  The pain is in the same place that I always have ulcerated intestine and they say I have alot of "creeping fat" all over my intestines too.  Have you all the same thing?

I have an ulcer in my small intestine too. I always know when I'm anemic from the heart palpitations.

Gumby,  funny you would say that, I was suspicious that I may be anemic because I have been light headed too.  I am feeling a little better tonight so I am going to just eat broth and jello and see how it goes tonight.  I will let you guys know how it goes and will call the doctor for sure if I am still feeling the same tomorrow.

Hi Sounds like your C or obstructed . The ER can be helpful with those problems . What is the creeping fat from ?lol gail

Hi Gail.  I wasn't too happy with that name either!!  Apparently they found this covering a lot of my intestine during surgery.  They took pictures of it, it looks like fat laying directly on the intestine and is caused by inflamation over the years.  Sort of the intestines way of incasing (sp?) itself when it is ill.  From what I was told, they often see it in crohn's and is an indicator of disease.  Despite the gross name, it has nothing to do with how much "body fat" a person has.  Although just hearing the name is enough to make a person want to go on a diet :)
