bah - kind of interesting read. they still have a ton of research to do, but at least they're playing with different ideas.

although, i didn't think it was a good idea to be on an antibiotic for a long period of time.. can't you become immune to if after a while?

Antibiotics are a viable treatment for Crohn's that has been used for many years. I've been on Flaygly for up to a year and a half at a time, and on and off Cipro many times. It helps some patients a lot, especially in acute flares.

Unfortunately it's not a cure (at lease not yet, but they are working on different combinations), it helps to control some of the symptoms to a degree, but for some patients it makes the disease bearable and helps to postpone surgery (which is the whole idea).

I have repeatedly asked my GI doc if I should take antibiotics and he always says it is not helpful. My opinion is, nothing else is helping me, maybe it will work. Why not try? But, I've also seen info on here that if someone with CD takes antibiotics they are more susceptible to some kind of infection of something. What is that?

dakotagirl - just curious where you are from. I am from Mandan, North Dakota. Wondered if we are neighbors.

long term use of antibiotics can cause infections to become tolerant of those dosages, and will sometimes need an increased amount. some antibiotics can lead to pseudomembranous(sp?) colitis.
