Anyone have trouble with their asthma due to CD?

I have asthma (have had for 15 years). Newly diagnosed with CD and GERD. Asthma seems to really kick up when I am constipated or if my GERD is out of control. I was on Protonix (2x day) for almost 2 years and I felt it finally stopped working for me. Switched to Aciphex and had a wonderful 6 weeks with no extra asthma. Now I'm back to several days a week where I just can't breathe.

I went through all the lung function tests and they are fine. Of course, they were done when I wasn't symptomatic. Rescue inhaler doesn't even help. Has anyone had these problems and what did you do?

I only tend to have issues with my asthma when I get a cold or I am around things that make my allergies act up. Unless I am placed on a new med and find that I am allergic to it then I will have asthma problems. I was tested to see if my CD had trveled to my lungs, I use to get remicade with a man who the CD had gone to his lungs, it is rare but possible especially if you have had CD for over 10 years. A CT scan of my chest ruled out the possibility that it had moved to my lungs but for some reason part of my left lung does not inflate to its full capacity which has shown on CT scnas.

Another thing to think about is pain meds can decrease lung function...that is not the propper working but I hope you understand that. That is whey if you OD on pain meds it is your lungs that first lower your respiratory rate causing less oxygenation of the blood. This is why many pain meds and other meds warn if you have asthma or other breathing issues since it can cause complications make sure to tell your doctor if you have noticed these symptoms within a short time of taking new meds whether it be OTC meds or RX

Hi Ohana so good to have a fellow asthamatic on board I was told I had emphysema and now rediagnosed with asthma so not thinking that is alot better. I am on pred. and as you know that is supposed to help the asthma inflamation I see you cannot take the pred. I am on 2 puffers Atrovent daily and salbutamol if needed. I too am having the gerd which is associated with asthma. I have a whole lot of leaning to do and have read some about it.. Have you found your triggers? I am not having big breathing problems but am having phlyem am on antibotics now as I have a cackle. Do you have a cold ? Not sure what flovent is. I have done singing to exercise the lungs over the years but not sure if it helps although I think it has helped me. Not sure what you should do but I would get back to a DR. on it .Hoping there might be others here with some imput on the subjest. Best Wishes gail

Yes, my asthma is amped up when I get a cold, but that is not the issue right now. Actually, when I had my annual pulmonary function test in May, my allergy doc told me that if I did that well next year I could probably get off the Flovent (just a daily asthma inhaler). Then the CD diagnosis comes and it seems like every time I start a new drug, I get a problem with my breathing. Also, when I have bad GERD and when I'm constipated.

Interesting about the CD moving to the lungs. I will have to ask my doc about that. Doc did say that if the new GERD medication doesn't work, that I should probably see a pulmonologist. It sounds like I should get a CT scan of lungs to find out some info. Problem is, I don't have the breathing problem every day. Some days I am fine. It usually correlates with a regular bowel movement or D.

I have had Asthma longer than I have had CD. I have been on many differenttreatments throughout the years and some of those treatments changed as soon as I was Dx with CD since certain meds they had back in the 80's for asthma made CD flare. I only go on Pred for my asthma when I am having a really really hard time. I have my own Nebulizer, I use the asmanex inhaler and have for 2 years taht is a synthetic corticosteroid inhaler I increase the dosage on that per my pulmonologists order when I start having Bronchitis linked when I get a cold etc. My asthma is its worst when I get a cold, I typically end up with bronchitis and have gotten pneumonia a few times too even with being careful and getting the pneumonia vaccine but that doesnt cover all types of pneumonia. Ct's revealed my left lung doesnt get to its full capacity and I often feel a wheeze in that lung especially at bedtime. I have used many different inhalers as well in the past. I have albuterol and asmanex now and those 2 have worked really well for me I also take Singulair it is taken at bedtime when used for asthma. If taken for allergies you take it in the morning.
