Hi all,

I am still suffering from a flare-up that started on Labor day of this year.  I have been on prednisone (and entocort) since then.  I have gained tons of weight and am very depressed.  The prednisone was not working, but the doc I have said to just wait...

I also did three weeks of Flagyl.  Disgusting, vile antibiotic....  That did not work, but again my doc said wait.

I went to a specialist in Boston yesterday.  He was very nice and knew his information.  He wants me off the prednisone as soon as possible.  Yay!!

He also wants me to discuss Remicade with my GI.  He thinks this is the next step.  I agree.

Does anyone know the process of this treatment??

Also, any good recommendations for GIs in RI??

This Boston guy was great, but he is so far away....

any help would be great,

is milford, ma too far away? i really like my gi :) he's about a 45 minute drive from me. i got to milford gastroenterology associates and i see dr. brian moquin. he's the youngest to the practice. there are about 5 or 6 other gastros there as well.

let me know if you'd like any more information.

The best GI in Rhode Island is Dr Samir Shah. Sorru I didnt see this post sooner I have been ill myself. He is actully president in some aspect of CCFA as well. According to another family friend Doctor he is the best GI in all of new england. His main office is in Providence near the main branch of the post office. He also has satelite locations in Pawtucket near memorial hospital and one office in Cranston...sry not sure what street that one is on havent been there. If you want more info on him it is on the ccfa site or you can just email me ill give you his number

Samir Shah is a CD specialist and runs many conferences and works with BRown university teaching interns etc.

I had posted info about this doc before too dont recall for who but I listed this doc. Dont go for any other doc in teh office if possible since shah is the only CD specialist in the office they are all GIs but he is the best as far as CD like i said in all of new england.

Thank you so much.  Will def. check him out.  The offices are not too far away.  I think I need someone on the cutting edge of the disease.  I have an appt with my old doc this week, but will try to get in with this new doc as soon as possible.  He sounds exactly what i am looking for.

Hi everyone,
I've met Dr Samir Shah, he has a great reputation. I saw another GI in that practice who has been excellent so far. I've found him to be extremely up-to-date with research and sensitive to the anxiety that comes with crohn's. Anyway, I know it can be hard to click with a doctor sometimes, so he can be another option. His name is Dr. Neil Greenspan, and he's been recognized as one of RI's top doctors several years in a row. Good luck!

Sorry for the double-post, but I forgot to ask for the name of the Boston specialist. I like having good doctor's in my file...just in case!

I'm not sure of his first name, but his last name was Warner.  He was out of the Lahey clinic on 41 Mall Rd. Burlington, MA.

He was really informative and had a great personality.

Greenspan is great too, I had Dr Kalmawitz initially when I was admitted back in February. It was when I was Dx with the perforation. He decided it would all get better on Cipro and Flagyl...My PCP was pissed that no Sx was dont the night they discovered the perforation. I did meet Dr Shah that night in the ER too he was the one who said I was going to need Sx. My PCP called the colorectal surgeon and said if she doesnt get Sx today I am having her transferred to RI Hospital. Needless to say Kalmawitz is the youngest in the practice but those ABs were never going to heal the perforation and the peritonitis I NEEDED surgery. That was why I said get shah. He is one of the directors for CCFA and he is the best Crohn's speciallist in New England. I use to see a doc affiliated with RI hospital he was the 1 who didnt believe I was in a flare even with hard medical evidence. Yes I had greenspan when he is on call and I was in the hospital, Spector is great too. Just please be leary if Kalmawitz ended up as my Doc and my PCP didnt push for the Sx I may be in a much worse situation. I may not even be here. I often wonder if I would have had as many complications had they performed surgery the night of the discovery of the perforation rather than waiting a good 36 hours later. Gratned I needed the ABs anyway for the peritonitis, Had the surgery been done sooner they could have cleaned the abd cavity out sooner maybe not allowing my temp to get to be 104.

So yes there are other great GIs in the office but as a woman who is longing to begin a family I think I have found the best doctor for my situation. He does many studies and holds conferences about CD meds the safety and efficacy while pregnant. Also he is young too he is about 40 where as my other GI was in his 60s...the 1 that didnt believe me and kept telling me you dont want kids...the old one I had kept pushing the issue back.
