I have chron's disease, and my biggest symptom is noise from my small intestine and stomach. The gurgling sometimes is so loud it can easily be heard over conversations. Since I work in a office environment it makes me very self-conscious of the problem. I have tried different diets and probiotics but nothing has helped completely. The best solution many times is just not eating, but that makes it hard to make it through the day.

Does anyone else suffer from this? Is there anything I can do?

Hi Wish I could help you with this but be assured your not alone mine is worse at night and it actually wakes me up from my sleep I also get loud gurgling like water in there .It is not very nice I have had this for awhile now, sorry cain't tell you what to do as I am still making the noises .Do you get a feeling of pressure when this happens? Thinking it might be the pred. I'am on but not sure. What do you take for your Cd in the line of meds.?lol gail

These are called hyperactive bowel sounds and if the gurgling has been an ongoing problem for you, there's probably not much you can do for it (other than talk really loudly to drone it out while you're in the office)! I wonder if taking an anti-spasmodic would help...probably not, but you never know. Have you ever tried an anti-spasmodic like dicyclomine or hyoscyamine?

I once had to leave an archives because my gut was gurgling so loudly that I am sure you could hear it across the room. It sounded like a toilet flushing.

what would be causing the noise?
would it be imflamation or you think it's caused by stricture?

I've had it before and I've never had a stricture, so it might not necessarily be that. For me it was just inflammation and my guts not being happy. By the way, the "proper" medical term for gut noises is "borborygmi", which is one of my favorite words ever :-) Mine got quieter when my guts started to get better from Remicade. Good luck!

Sarita - I have not tried an anti-spasmodic. I am assuming its for spasms, and I don't really think that is whats going on.

Danbaek - I think it is partially from strictures. I have a couple areas of narrowing, and also had 6 inches removed from my small intestine where it was really narrow. Since removing the really narrow area, my pain has been really minor compared to what it was. I think sitting all day also restricts the natural movement, since during the weekends and vacations my gut seems to be quieter.

I have tried taking an Anxiety medicine. I think when I am more self conscious (during meetings and such) just thinking about my stomach making noises is enough to make it happen. It has helped a little.

I am visiting the Mayo at the end of January, so hopefully they can come up with a solution. My other GI docs don't think its really a big deal, though its a huge deal to me.

Currently I am on Imuran.

The antispasmodics can reduce peristalsis, the muscular contractions that move food through your system. They may or may not help, but if it's really bothering you they might be worth asking your doc about.

Otherwise, even many "normal" people have hyperactive bowel sounds (sometimes extremely so) and it really just depends on your physiology. If you find that being on vacation and weekends are easier, it could have something to do with how you are feeling during the work day (i.e., do you seem to get pretty stressed during the work day?) If you have a lot of borborygmi (good one, Zazucat!) and then all of a sudden one day hear total silence in addition to extreme pain or vomiting, you need to see a doc, because that could signal an obstruction.

My daughter had loud rumbling because of a stricture, but it quieted down when she started eating yogurt.

I had the same problem. My intestines would make loud gurgling noises and also make sounds like a drain being unclogged. Especially a few hours after I ate. I was so self conscious about it because it was loud and I knew other people heard it. Some would make comments like are you hungry or do you need something to eat or they would just glance at me. It happened in meetings at work or in church. I would cough, shuffle papers or try to make some other noises to cover up the noises going on in my gut. This had been going on for years.

In my case, I had several strictures and I had them surgically removed this past Oct. That seems to have corrected it for me. I have to say that the loud gurgling noises are gone. My intestines occasionally will make grumbling noises but it is nothing like it was.

I would check with you GI because in your case it could be something else entirely.

I honestly don't know what to say, but I've heard peoples stomachs make noise that don't have IBD or even IBS issues, and I'm not talking hunger pain noises either.

I've had CD constant (no full remission) for 16ish yrs now and have never had chronic noises even at my very worst flaring...only on occassion when I had gas issues.

During my most recent flares, I have had a lot of gut noises. Like the other people in here have said, I think it has something to do with inflammation.

I get them all of the time, I told my GI and she said that is normal digestion (even when I have not ate anything)  I have to go for a ct scan she thinks I have a stricture.

I get these noises sometimes, depends what I eat, or if I don't eat for like 12hrs, its like its saying i'm hungry eat! LOL
MY friend gets it often too, he doesn't have CD, I think it varies by the way peoples stomaches are, go figure, but I'm hoping it doesn't mean stricture..

I also get the gurgling noises,& like Gail,mine are always worse at night.However,I didn't have these noises when I had strictures & inflammation.Mine started post resection & after I went into remission.

The best way that I have found to deal with the embarassment is to laugh my butt off at myself,then the other people laugh & then it's no big deal.The worst is during intimate moments,it's really hard to be serious with all those bowel sounds going on...haha

My hubby and I have decided my gut noises are my revenge for his very loud snoring that I've put up with for over 30 years.  I've kept us both awake on occasion!  Eating soluble fiber seems to help me, but I have a lot of IBS too.

Humor always helps!  My coworkers are great and they just laugh with me.  Even if they don't really comprehend the problem.

during my last trip to the er the er doctor gave me a script for hyoscyamine. It was to help with the mind numbing cramping pains I had. It stops the cramping and the sounds for me. -Jason

I too had extremely loud gurgling noises coming from within.  I take citrucel fiber and that seems to help the most.  Sometimes I still get gurgling anyway, then I take enteric coated pepermint oil.  Between the two of those I've been able to eliminate the uncomfortable and disturbingly loud gurgling.
