HI,

I recently developed a bad rash in my ankles and legs. Some are tiny dots with scabs and some are raised welts 3/8" in size. I went to the dermatologist and he thought it was some new pants I was wearing but we washed those one time first. At the time I went I had no idea Crohn's can produce rashes on the legs. My father had Crohn's only a few years older then I am now back in the 80's. In 03 I had diarrhea for 3 months went to the GI doc and he did a colonoscopy he said he found inflammation in my ileum but the biopsy's came back neg for crohn's. After another few weeks the diarrhea went away. I also had a liver function that was high he monitored that and I had a ultrasound which showed fatty liver. I lost weight and the liver went back to normal. I'm wondering if I should notify my GI doc I haven't seen him in about 2 years now since my liver went back to normal. I recently found out from my Uncle that my father's Crohn's was never confirmed with biopsy's either.

There is a skin rash that is associated with Crohn's.

Erythema nodosum may be associated with inflammatory bowel disorders (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)

Erythema nodosum results in reddish, painful, tender lumps most commonly located in the front of the legs below the knees. The tender lumps, or nodules, of erythema nodosum range in size from 1 to 5 centimeters. The nodular swelling is caused by a special pattern of inflammation in the fatty layer of skin.

I would suggest you see your GI physician to see if indeed you may have Crohn's if that is what you are concerned about.   Many other things may cause a rash or allergic reaction.

Thanks for the quick response. This rash is mostly on my inner upper legs and sides of my legs so it may have nothing to do with Crohn's as you say many things can cause rashes. This isn't real painful unless I really rub on them maybe just a rash from some pants that didn't get rinsed enough or somthing. Crohn's is always in the back of my mind since I remember so much of my father fighting this illness when I was in my teen's.

FYI, CD can cause SEVERAL kinds of rashes. ED is just the most common & most discussed..

Matthew is absolutely right. Several types of skin rashes can accompany Crohn's disease. Pyoderma gangrenosum is one that several of our members unfortunately have.

Let us know how you make out with your rash.

Yes PG is becoming MORE common in the CD ppl or the docs are FINALLY getting what it is not sure
BUT I do know it took me years literally to have mine DX
I dont think this is PG more the EN......or another skin problem ..........

The PG is autoimmune and eats your skin from inside out the blood literally seems to feel like it is boiling and the pain is so bad that I would honestly rather give birth to triplets ....unmedicated ....and would never ever wish this on my worst enemy..

Yes we have I believe 3 members with PG...........
