Question regarding PRED and weaning.

During this latest flare I was prescribed 40mg pred and Asacol. After weaning to 10mg of the pred I started to flare again. My GI then changed me to Entocort and pentasa. It worked wonders! until i weaned off the entocort. I went from 9mg to 3mg in three weeks. After stopping the entocort I had a bowel obstrustion.

I have since restarted the entocort 9mg and 10 of pred and Im still obstructing and wondering why its not working for me.

Does pred Always have to be started in massive doses? 50, 60 mg? or can you start with ten and work your way up until the symptoms resolve?

Hello,

Prednisone dosage is determined by the condition being treated and your response to the drug. Typical starting doses can range from 5 - 60 mg a day.Once you respond to the drug, which you already know, your physician will lower the dose gradually to the minimum effective amount.

My hubby has always started on the higher end as the medications will rapidly reduce inflammation. Long term use of Prednisone is avoided whenever possible. I hope this helps you in some small way.
