Side of my toenail cut out from infection

Yes, you read that correctly. Today I had the side of my big toe nail cut totally away due to infection. How did it come to this?

December 4th - took my 6th dose of Humira

6th - awoke with temperature and the feeling that every joint was about to explode. Diagnosed with serum sickness from the Humira and placed on prednisone.

11th - had finished taper off pred and awoke with fever, joint pain, and chest pain. Had previously scheduled doctor's appt and when they saw me, sent me to the ER. Had total work-up including cardiac and told I needed to spend night for observation. Signed out AMA and went back on prednisone for unresolved serum sickness from the Humira.

13th - very shaky from the pred. Stood up out of chair and promptly fell on my face. Twisted right ankle in process.

14th - diagnosed with Grade III sprain of right ankle including a joint effusion and placed in a boot cast. Told to continue on pred until Sunday.

20th - GI appt and started on Celebrex to control joint inflammation and calcification of the AS. Feet and legs begin to feel heavy and I have trouble picking them up. Notice lots of edema in legs and feet. Try to ignore problems because I am WAY behind on Christmas preparations. Start stubbing toe in cast boot because it is higher than I am used to - remember I have no sense where my feet are in space due to neuropathy.

27th - REALLY crack the right big toe on kitchen cabinet.

29th - toe is very sore. I notice crack and clear fluid draining from it near the nail.
30th - awoke to pus oozing from the toe. Call on-call provider and told to get rear to ER. After 6 hours, one ER doc, one surgeon, xrays, and blood work, am sent home to return in AM to have minor surgery on infected toe.

Today - it HURTS!!!! Have not looked at it yet but imagine it looks hideous. Thank goodness it isn't summer and sandal wearing time because it would scare young children and puppies away for sure! The dang thing is throbbing like crazy.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! and I am SO, SO glad that December is over.

Oh Ides,that sounds so painfull'bless your heart I hope that it heal quickly and you get to feeling better.In the mean time know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I would like to forget all of 2007! It really was a sucky year. Glad its over! Welcome 2008!!

I had similar years in 1970 and 1980 with good years in between. Boy, those two years were L-O-N-G ! I actually threatened to run away New Year's Eve 1989 and not return home until New Year's Day 1991!!!

But I made it thru both 1970 and 1980 and 1990 turned out to be a decent year. Hopefully you've left all the bad luck behind in 2007 and 2008 will bring some relief and good health.

Ouch that sounds really painful and I hope you are now on the road to healing. December is over, may 2008 be a good year for you and may you find peace.

Geesh! Sounds like December 2007 was extremely sucky for you. Hope you get feeling better soon and have a wonderful 2008 Please take care of yourself.

I want to forget 07 too! the coming of 08 has been bitter sweet for me due to what i have to look forward to. But you are totally in my prayers. I cant imagine having gone through what you've gone through! u must be so strong! I pray prosperity, blessings and happiness for all of us in 08.
Question: How long have you been on humira, im supposed to start it thursday, now im a little scared :o/

I also had that done last April and just be careful being on the Humira, I ended up with a PICC line secondary to an MRSA infection.  I havehad numerous MRSA infections since my 1st Bowel Resection in 2005. 

I am a nurse who was changing my dressings daily as instructed and still ended up with another MRSA infection.  Good luck to you and Happy and Healthy New Year as well.  I hope that 2008 is better for all of us!

I think you need to go to Tahiti where you can wear flip flops until your toe heals completely and you have recovered emotionally from your ordeal. And can you take all of us with you?
