My GI swears by VSL-3, says he has had many Crohns patients who have shown marked improvement on it. I have used some other probiotics in the past and not seen a real benefit (I have fairly mild disease, well managed on 6mp.) So I began VSL-3 about
6 weeks ago at his urging and I would say I have somewhat fewer min-flares. I'd rate it as moderately helpful, but it may be more effective in more severe disease. I do know that it is the only probiotic with a record (I think two) of clinical trials showing symptom alleviation. So I'll see how it works longer term, but I tend to come down on the side of the "can't hurt and probably helps some" side in the probiotic debate. Not a cure, not the only med you need, but most likely a useful adjunct to other therapies.
