Ive been in the hospital fofr 7 days now. I came in with general abdominal pain. Ct showed a perferation and my terminal was removed. have not been able to urinate since???

Ive had th efoley reinserted 3 times in the past 7 days and now they want to send me home to cath myself!!

Can one cath themselves? Is that possible? Can you arrange for a nurse to come to your house?

I have a friend who had an etopic pregnancy and got a bad infection after her surgery. She had to self-cath for a long time so I guess it is possible. I am so sorry you are in this position. It sounds horrable. I hope you are able to pee on your own soon!!!

Yes anyone can cath themself if they are taught the technique by a professional.  This is not uncommon thow not many people talk about it.

I am sorry you have to go through this but getting home is the up side of this having to cath yourself. You can go home and still empty your bladder.

In 1988 I had a "simple" vag hysterectomy and bladder suspension. Had complications and came home after 19 days having to cath myself. At first I thought it would be next to impossible to do, but after a couple times it became quite easy. It actually was easier to get back to urinating on my own once I got home. Getting home might be just the thing you need....good luck!

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this miserable time. I haven't had to cath myself, but I have had to spend what seemed like an eternity in the hospital several times. One particular time occured over Mother's day when my girls were little. I was in for about 3 weeks. When I was finally released, the nurse wheeling me out saw me crying and asked me why. I just told her I was so happy to be finally going home. So I agree that home may be JUST what you need to get everything back on track. And if you end up not being able to self-cath, you should be able to convince your insurance company that it is cheaper to send a home nurse to help you than to send you back to the hospital.

I just had a botched cath in the hospital and wanted to rip the bag off and pour the contents over the medical assistant's head. Not sure where I found the restraint, but...anyway, did anyone explain why you need the catheter at this point? No one should have to be cathed a week after their surgery! Usually the reason for the cath in the first place is because the anesthetic can have some pretty powerful effects on "evacuation," but these effects should not last as long as they seem to with you. When was the last time you tried goin' on your own?

I get the same problem anytime I have had surgery and had to be cath'd. Some tips to help you get going again is to get a squirt bottle and fill it with warm water and squirt it down there or also try running the water in the bathroom as you try to go. Hope your recovery goes well for you at home and you get feeling better soon.

I had to have a cath. after my resection and they even sent me home with it because they were giving my bladder a time to heal after repairing it from damage caused by a fistula to my bladder. I had it inserted for a total of 2½ weeks, but I never had to cath myself. Sorry you are going through this.

I'm so sorry you're having to undergo that! Hopefully being home will be nice though.

OUCH! I'm sure you'll find the strength with proper training, however, I would probably be a baby about it myself. I had to wear a nephrostomy bag for awhile prior to my resection and I was afraid of managing it, but I wore it for 3 months and did just fine. If anything it helped prepare me "a little" in case I ever need an ostomy. A stoma would be scary to me...but if I had to take care of it I would. Good luck to you and I hope you're running free soon!

both surgeries i had were supposed to be 4-5 day stays. both ended up being 13. only the first time did i get pneumonia. both times my system kept shutting down. i had an NG tube both times. the first time for 3.5 days, the second for 1 day. that sucks. they were gonna send me home with the foley but seeing how i couldnt get well enough to leave, it never happened. by the time i was able to go home it came out. all in all, i find solace that both times when i woke up out of surgery the doc was able to not give me any kind of ostomy, permanent or temporary. hang in there. your body will heal. it takes time. have patient. i know it is rough. this is when you find out what you are made of. it is easy to quit but if you fight and stay positive the healing will be easier.
