I am in a never ending search to find a job that fits with my experience.  I have often thought about becoming a case management nurse for an insurance company - maybe even the one I work for now!  If I have a BS degree in a completed unrelated field, a lot of medical experience as far as researching cost and care, terminology and results studies....what am I looking at to get my RN.  How many years?  How much clinical and course work?  I am trying to figure out a time frame.

Alot of your classes from your BS will count,you will have to find a nursing program,you could get an associates in 2-3 years at a cpmmunity college. The hours for the case managers are awesome at the hospital that I work at,they work M-F,8A-4:30P,and take like one weekend call a month,much better than us floor nurses,atgghhh,I complain,but being a Pediatric nurse is the only job I could imagine,love those kiddos :-)

Oh,the coarse work...normally 1-2 lectures a week,and 1-2 clinicals a week,alot of colleges offer evening/weekend options now.

Habs- are you in Mass? If so my friend just finished a Nursing program specifically for people with an unrelated batchelors degree. She had one in fashion business. I think for her to get her RN it was 2 years (given all her transferred credits) and I belive she is doing another year to get her NP.

Thanks guys. Fitzy I am in Western NY. I did not realize 2 years was possible. It's too long to get into the job at my current company, but I already sorft of knew that.
Lynn...how much clinical time is required? I was wondering if I would have to give up working to fit in course work. I can't afford to do that.

I worked all through nursing school. My clinicals were two days a week,plus two lectures a week. It's hard to work and go to school,but well worth it in the end :-)   I know at the hospital where I work,we try to work around the nursing students schedule,most of the students get there nursing assistant certificate,alot of community colleges and nursing homes offer this course. It's not a very long course,I think just a few months.

Hi,
You have a BSN so you should not have to repeat any of the required general education classes.  Most community colleges would give you credit for your general eds and you could enter a 2 year ADN but depending on what you want to do with the RN degree.  Management jobs for RN's required BSN in the big facilities.
