Symptoms of post resection adhesions???

Hey guys,

I saw the other posts on the recovery time and all of adhesion surgery but I was just wondering the symptoms some have had with the adhesions... I had surgery 3 years ago so my GI says its unlikely to be adhesions but I have had a constant dull pain right in the same area of my surgery and it turns to a sharp shooting pain when I bend or move certain ways and after I eat. This has been going on for a month now and I have been through 3 CT scans and a colonoscopy which all show no active crohns. The one did show a cyst on my right ovary-- which I have gotten before with no symptoms so my GI told me to see my GYN to be sure that would cause problems so I did that but she said that it sounds more like adhesions from the surgery. I also see to fluctuate between running to the bathroom with D and not being able to go for days so the doc told me to take stool softner to try to regulate but it hasn't helped the pain.. so I was just wondering if anyone has had these same symptoms before and if it possible to not have problems with adhesions until 3 years post surgery??

Anytime you have surgery you will develop adhesions.  Some times they do not give you any problems but in your case something is causing a problem. Please return to your physician and insist on finding out what is going on.

I have had multiple abdominal surgeries and have adhesions. When I don't go regularly or sometimes after I eat I get sharp pains in upper right rib cage area that really hurt. I have found a heating pad really helps. I sometimes used to get obstructive type episodes that they attributed to adhesions. But that stopped after I put myself on a strict low residue diet. I have had many adhesions with my surgeries. Some have been painful because they were ausing partial obstructions therefore when I ate or gas tried to go thru I wanted something really hard to bit down on. I also have had issues where I tend to vomit with the adhesions. My adhesions were seen during my colonoscopy that was done prior to my last resection for my fistula. In all they had to remove another 1/4 of my colon to rid me of the obstructing adhesions and fistula. I found more feces would come out of the fistula at times when I missed a day as far as a bm goes. I would have to use a suppository to go and after going I would have a couple rounds of D after the time I would go with the suppository. I began having pains again at the anastamosis site about 3 weeks ago I currently should have my period too and my abd pains always increased around then as do my joint pains and swelling. I do have a small cyst on my right ovary but now my pain is on the left making it a bit easier to determine CD vs another issue. Most adhesions cause no pain however as most articles say I think they are more of an issue when partial or full obstructions accur because of them I am unsure about peop;le but animal adhesions can actually cause certain organs (bowels, stomach etc) to twist upon themselves too but if no obstructions are being detected by scope its hard to say. Mine were hard to see via scope too the GI knew there were some in there but not the severity etc.

I am currently having multiple obstructions that I believe are caused by adhesions.  My doctor is unsure and is having me under go some tests. A long time ago, I would get what I thought were kinks in my bowel, this was really soon after my resections.  The pain would be very intense and would last for a day or so and then start to fade, like a sore muscle.  But these episodes are different.  They start out very quickly, last for 12 to 18 hours and then I pretty much feel fine.  So we really aren't sure what is going on, but the symptoms are almost dead on for obstruction. I don't think that 3 years post op is too soon to be having adhesion pain.  I think you start to develop adhesions during the healing process, so really anytime after surgery you could have pain.

But whatever the cause, you shouldn't be in pain and you should follow up with your doctor to find the cause and hopefully a treatment plan.

I also suffer with post surgery adheasions, I am seeing a pain mangement Dr. because of it. It's been almost 4 years since my last surgery and the pain is still there. The pain meds do help some, but I wish there was a better sollution. I guess I will run this pain management thing out, unless I find something better. any ideas?

this is a difficult topic, because docs differ on how they feel about adhesions, whether they cause pain or not. I have had a couple surgeries for them and will probably always be a problem for me. all you can do for them is surgery and therefore cause more. all I can say is when you can't take it anymore you have them cut, until them take drugs :)

Thanks everyone for your replys.. the information is as always very helpful... I saw my GI on Thursday while getting my remicade and I told him that the GYN said it is not the cyst causing the pain so he said to see if the remicade helped with the pain and to call him to let him know how I am doing... I just hate being in pain but with taking care of a one year old and working full time I feel like I can't take pain killers except sometimes at night or I feel like a zombie..

hi there.... I have adhesion pain too.... It started about 6 months after surgery. The first thing they found was Ovarian cysts... without much sympathy from the obgyn, then still pain - they put me on a different pill... THEN still pain - and finally talked my gastro into sending me to the pain clinic. It is helping so much. I have pain 1-2 hours after I eat about 75% of the time. So I am trying to eat smaller meals - also I can take the pain med before I eat... I don't like to really do that. Hopefully I won't become a painkiller junkie. Anyhow - I feel your pain!!
