crohn's pregnancy humira and a cold that won't go away

I've had Chron's for about 10 years now and it only took 8 years before we found medication that would keep me in remission. First it was Remicade for a year, until I had a reaction to it, and now it's Humira. Both meds have kept me completely healthy, no Crohn's issues at all, and I never get sick, even when the rest of the family is sick. Until now. I've been pregnant two times in the last 4 months (had a miscarriage in November and am now 5 weeks along.) It seems that exactly the day after conception, each time, I've gotten sick with a bad cold or the flu and it just keeps hanging on. Has anyone had this happen? I'm assuming the combo of the Humira and being pregnant is really whacking out my system. I thought I'd check with people in the know before I call my GI about it.

I was not on Humira when i got pregnant but did get a brutal flu in my 5th week. It lasted seriously for a week and then lingered for another. I'm not sure what could have caused it. I actually never get that sick (surprisingly because I have been on Remicade for 6 years) and this was the sickest I had been in a few years. I just assumed my body had so much going on it didn't have the strength to fight off the illness. In early pregnancy (so my library of pregnancy books tell me) your body is going through so many changes getting your body ready. Again, I'm just "guessing". But I did get over my flu eventually and I am 15 weeks pregnant now. I know there are lots of women on the site with babies and a large number are pregnant so hopefully someone on the same drug will respond. Take care of yourself and congrats on your pregnancy.

I'm on Humira and 32 weeks pregnant. I've had a couple of colds this winter - I'm fighting a nasty one right now, I think it's probably just coincidence that you've gotten sick at the time you've become pregnant both times. I'd be interested in hearing what your doctor thinks though - so please let me know when you've talked to him/her. :)
Congrats on your pregnancy! I had 2 miscarriages before I had my almost 3 year old and I know how stressed out getting pregnant made me. :)

Beth-Did you get pregnant with your three year old when you were on Humira or any type of medicine? I'm just curious b/c I would like to eventually have a baby in the future but am afraid of birth defects b/c of all the meds I've been on...any advice would help

I was on Imuran during my pregnancy with my older daughter. She is healthy and perfect. :)

I am not pregnant, but I am on Humira. Since being on it, when I do get sick I seem to be sicker than anyone else who is also sick. I rarely get just a little cold. It seems to turn into huge thing which lasts for weeks and weeks. Coughs will last two months, etc... I think it's the medication mostly. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Thanks for all of the replies! Now I've spent the whole weekend sick, sick, sick and I should probably call the doctor. If I find out anything more than "tough it out" I'll post!

I have been pregnant twice since August and get Pregnancy Rhinitis. It is a stuffy nose, sneezing, and runny nose-related to pregnancy hormones clogging your nasal passages. It can last all of pregnany. It may be that????

Hi !

I am new here!!

I have had crohns for 15 years now.

During these years I have taken, Asacol, 6mp, salofalk, prednisone, and been on antibiotics.

Most of these medications worked well for a few years.

I have now been taking Humira for about a year since the other meds stopped working. I have been feeling great since taking humira!!The only side affect I get is cold sores on my lips and really bad.

I take Humira every 3 weeks and have been perscribed Valtrex for the cold sores which happen always a few days after the injection.

In the other emails below it mentions that some of you had miscarriages.

Is this because of the humira???

I am 33 years old and want to try having a baby this year. I know not many tests have been done on pregnant woman when taking Humira. my doctor said the most important thing is for me not get a flare during the pregnancy. It seems the doctor is pushing me towards taking the Humira while pregnant. He said he has had a few patients who were pregnant while taking Humira and both mother and baby have not had any problems that he has seen.I will also have to be followed as a high risk pregnancy. I am just nervous about taking any medication while pregnant.

What about breast feeding? Can this be done while taking Humira?

I would really like appreciate all the info on mother's who were pregnant while taking humira and breast feeding.

I took Humira during my last pregnancy. I started around the 2nd trimester, but that's only because I was taking Remicade in the first trimester and it wasn't working (had been on it 6+ years). Humira kept everything quiet. I have a healthy baby. I breastfed her for 7 months on Humira too. Having had 3 kids, I would tell you that the BEST thing you can do for your baby is to stay flare free (if possible) and that might mean staying on your meds. I'm getting ready to try for #4 - our LAST one! And I will be taking Humira throughout the pregnancy and breastfeeding as well. If you have more questions I'd be happy to answer them.
