Cystogram/Foley Cathedor = urine infections?

I haven't posted much recently. I am a 19 year old male with Crohn's.. diagnosed just 2 years ago. I am currently on Remicade, Pentasa, and Imuran and enjoying a nice, long remission. However, in spite of feeling GREAT, I've been having awful bladder infections that keep reoccurring. I have right hydronyhprosis in my right kidney, which is thought to have been because my Crohn's began to affect my urinary tract.

On Friday (tomorrow) I am having a cystogram done. For those of you who don't know.. they basically put a catheter inside me and see what the problem is. I have had this test done about a year ago and I can NOT put into words how AWFUL IT WAS. I screamed so loud I thought i was literally dying. I've had nightmares over the past year because it was so bad. To my dismay my urologist said I have to do it again. I begged and PLEADED for something to put me to sleep... it's been an ongoing battle for the past month. At the end of the day my doctor basically said it's such a simple procedure that I'd be CRAZY to be put to sleep. Ok, so maybe I'm crazy and asking for too much?

At any rate.. they prescribed me 2 pills of Xanax to take an hour before the procedure. They said this should be enough to knock me out a little bit. My question is; do you think it will actually help? I wan't to be sedated as much as possible because I am absolutely TERRIFIED. Any encouragement would help tremendously!

P.S. I have been in a LOT of stomach pain over the past 2 years, but this is HANDS DOWN the worst type of pain I'm ever received (the Foley catheter). I can't seem to find anybody who will agree with me!

I feel your pain about the catheters. I almost tore a nurse's head right off his body the last time I had a Foley done in the hospital and actually demanded they take it out - and I have a pretty good tolerance for pain (AND I'm a woman, which makes catheters much less painful). I have no doubt that you were screaming your head off, and for good reason. I am sorry you have to have another cystogram.

I think the Xanax will help for sure. But you should ask your doc if he will at the very least have a dose of morphine on hand just in case it is too painful for you. I don't think that would be too much to ask. It frustrates me that patients have to battle their docs for something as simple as this. If I were you, I would ask him straight up if HE'S ever had a cystogram (probably hasn't), and why, specifically, he is against giving you any pain medication. I don't think you'll need to actually be "knocked out," but they should give you something if you're in pain.

Please let us know how it goes...and remember, all of this somehow builds character. Right!? Sigh...hang in there, bud!

Well I'm not a guy but I do share some of your pain. I have periodic hydronyhprosis. Last time I had to wear a nephrostomy bag for about two months because the inflammation was blocking the ureter. You don't want to have to do this. I doesn't hurt, but it's very annoying especially in warm weather. I wish the doc would give you some pain relief and know that you NEED this procedure one way or the other. Let us know how you do with the xanax.
