Matthew... I need your kidney stone expertise.  I am having wicked pain that comes and goes in days.  Thought it was a partial obstruct, but now I am wondering if it could be kidney stones.  I'm a girl so I don't have the same pain potential as you :-).  My pain is right below my rib cage.  I am having the same symptoms as when I had the severe gallstone issues so I was thinking kidney stones--they thought my galls were kidneystones in the beginning.

Obviously I'm not Matthew, but I thought I would try and help> Usually my pain starts in the back, usaully one
sided. It then progresses to what I call collicky pain,which often makes me nauseous, or I do vomit. At this stage
I have to go to th ER as the pain is too unbearable. They tell me that the pain is at it's worst when the stone is
trying to leave the kidney. I haven't really ever had pain under the rib cage...

Thanks Vicky! You're the first women to talk kidney stones that I have noticed. I was starting to think that us girls just didn't get them as much. I am going to do some more research....I am extremely short waisted so my rib cage is not far from my lower back/waist. Yup, I'm one of those people whose jeans almost meet the bra! :-)

I'm Matthew, but not the one you are looking for.

I have had many stones though. I'll concur with Vicki that the pain has always started in my lower back, and radiates downward and forward.

However, I have had similar pain in the front, just below the ribs. It would trigger nausea and would last a while. I had the GI check it out. All he could find was an enlarged gall bladder, but no stones. We never did figure out what it was, and it resolved on it's own many years ago, and never returned.

Gall stones can be found pretty easily with an ultrasound, though.

You can have pain from kidney stones in diff. places depending on where the stone is. Most times when it is the kidney it is not that painful unless its very large. When it gets to the ureter thats when the trouble starts. Pain will start in the lower back of the side the kidney with the stone is. If it can not pass into the bladder you will start to have a heavy feeling on that side and then a very strong urge to urinate. Not much will happen when you try though and the pain will increase. Pain will then start to be sharp and in the area in front and very low on the side of the stone. Usually nausea is next. I have had so many stones I dont go to the ER untill I am sure I can not pass them on my own. I give it a day. The problem is if you wait too long the kidney can shut down, and if this happens there is no guarantee it will start working again even if the stone is removed. Had that happen ,,not fun.. The ER doc will pump you full of fluids and pain meds and a med to help you dilate the ureter. If you still do not pass it, they may crush it with ultrasound or as in my case they may go in and get it, or place a stint to keep it back until it can be crushed. I dont think this would be any more fun for a woman than it is for a man. The scope they use is the same size as the one for a colon exam. Do the math and you can see how that may feel.
