Pain....Does anyone else with Chron's have this?

I have had crohn's now for 6 years.  I've had a very mild case, and admit that I have not taken my medication as I should.  I am suppose to take Asacol (6 pills per day).  Though, since my symptoms have always been so mild, I haven't seen the need to take the medicine.  Anyway, for the last 2 weeks I have had these cramps in my stomach and a sensation that I can only descripe as a bubbling feeling that sometimes ends up being gas.  I can hear it with my ears sometimes.  Sometimes I get a few sharp intense pains and then it seems to go away.  I have not been going to the bathroom regularly either durring this time.  I am not sure what triggered all of these, but I haven't felt good for 2 weeks.  I have since been taking my medicine and have an appt with my gastro, but was wondering if these symptoms sound like what anyone else has.

Hi Brian! Yes! That sounds like me...I have also been diagnosed with a "mild" case, although sometimes it doesn't feel so mild. But what you are experiencing, the random, sharp pains and bubbles sounds to me like trapped air, or gas. The doc also told me recently that I have IBS, which would cause those symptoms too. With Crohn's you'll just have D all the time, but with IBS you may be constipated one day and running to the bathroom all day the next! There is an Irritable Bowel Syndrome page here at HW too!

Ask your GI about it for sure, but that's what could be going on with you too. I was prescribed Asacol, 6 a day...but have only been taking 3 a day. When I was taking 6, I was losing tons of hair -- and my mouth was very dry and I just didn't feel good. I seem to be tolerating 3 okay. The other thing that has helped me a lot when my tummy is feeling gassy or just has painful bloating and air bubbles is activated charcoal capsules. I picked them up at the local health food store.

PS - and about not taking the medicine, as much as I hate drugs and want to avoid them...I kind of feel like it's a good idea to take the Asacol even when symptoms aren't present because it helps control the inflammation which could cause damage. That's my thought at least. I heard flax seed oil is a good, natural way to control inflammation too...haven't tried it though.

Hey Brian I have had Crohns for over 32 years. I like you was diagnosed with a mild case of Crohns. I once enjoyed a 20 year remission without any medications. That remission ended with an emergency resection due to a complete obstruction. The only med I take now is Asacol. It is one of the mildest meds, with the least side effects. Every Crohnie should be taking some kind of medication to keep the inflammation under control.

All the belly rumbles and cramps could be a sign also that you are flaring. It could also be just gas as Melissa suggested, but I am kinda doubting that. It could also be that you have some narrowing going on in there causing problems. When I have some kind of narrowing I have alot of tummy rumbles, I become more constipated and feel generally sick to my stomach. I am glad you have started taking your meds again and have an appt. You don't want to let this go on too long or it could be more difficult to get it back under control. Hope you get feeling better soon.

Thank you both for the responses. I haven't experienced this stuff before since it was pretty mild to this point. I had a bout with this same thing about 2 months ago that lasted 1 week, then was fine for 3 solid weeks. Now it is back and doesn't seem te be going away 2 weeks into this. It is starting to bring me down, so I hope the dr. can help. Thanks again!

Apparently crohns-colitis (CD affecting the colon) is one of the tougher areas to treat, which is why asacol is what is prescribed to you, and although you mention you're lucky enough to have it mild it is still one of the areas that is supposedly hardest to get under full control. My only concern for you is that it may get worse, making it that much harder...

I am severely allergic to asacol myself (not to mention all the other oral RX of which I'm also either allergic to or have no response to them).

The symptoms you're describing can simply be symptoms of crohns-colitis, it's the nature of the beast, things might be getting a little more aggressive, I hope you're able to nip it in the bud before it gets totally out of control. I have been in a constant flare with my crohns-colitis my entire 17 yrs of having it...for me it comes and goes in the rectom (proctitis) and stayed a short while (1-1.5 yrs) in the TI when I first got sick (I had it in all those areas including the anus in the beginning of my disease) but it's definitely stayed constant in my colon and my anus with perianal crohns skin tags which is actually where my disease started and progressed internally.

What does Prednizone do? Does anyone know. I have heard of people being put on that. As of right now, I just want this aching in my stomach to go away. I was thinking about drinking some pepto bismal if that would help, but I doubt that it will. I am looking for some relief before Wednesay when I go to the dr. Do you think eating less or not at all will make me feel better? I usually just eat anything I want and am 99% of the time fine. I am surprised this has gone on for 2 weeks. I guess even though I have had the disease for 6 years, I know little about it. I have had so few problems....

Prednisone does everything... :P... *Hate the stuff... I'm on 40 mg of it... I eat like I'm starving all the time... got acne really bad... even on my shoulders and chest... it can cause osteoporosis... and induce diabetes... But on the bright side, it can get you feeling better... or at least a little better... very quickly...*


I haven't been diagnosed with IBS.... only Crohn's... and I have constipation problems really bad... I also have the gurgling problem pretty bad, too...


*And I can't ever seem to get rid of the pain I go through unless I take pain medicine for it... :(*

Hi there, I really think you should be seen sooner than later.  I experienced this type of pain the beginning of  the year.  Was on Remicade and Methotrexate.  Two trips to Urgent Care at my doctors clinic and then the hospital.  Now I take Asacal and Humira.  I believe that when I feel good I need to take meds to keep me feeling good and everything at bay.  I would rather take my medicine that deal with that pain.  Go be seen!  Take care.

Brian, Prednisone is a cortisteroid that helps to get the inflammation under control. It is a med with side effects as Celey said, but it is also one of the best meds for the inflammation. I too don't like it, but consider it a necessary evil sometimes to help me get my Crohns under control again. I will deal with the side effects in order to feel better.

I loved pred, it always worked quickly for me but of course as soon as I tappered low enough symptoms quickly came back too..I never got horrible side-effects from it the times that I took it, but unfortunately it no longer does the trick anymore.

hi...this sounds like me....a few years ago i went to the dr for bad cramps and irregular bm's.  He prescribed me some medication and said it was ibs....so i didn't take it seriously and didn't take the meds right and eventually stopped.  4 yrs later here i am....with crohn's colits and a stricture...after all those years without any symtoms.  It sounds like a flare up to me.

I have a number of things going on right now, but the "bubbling" guts and gas (and gas pains) have been a problem for me of late. I have many food sensitivities (I have been gluten free for years) but it seemed like it was the worst when I would eat things with corn lately. I stopped eating the "usual suspects" (like my favorite organic corn chips at lunch) and the "bubbling" has since stopped. I still have pain and gas, but this "bubbling" that was happening on my left side seems to have gone away since tweaking my diet yet again.

I also have an abscess that I can feel that just popped up. I have an appt with my doc tomorrow. But this "bubbling" and now the abscess this close together makes me wonder.

I've had a "mild" case so far too and haven't been on meds for the most part (they seem to not agree with me very well.) Sounds like yours is acting up. Maybe see a doc to get re-evaluated?

I thought maybe I had a yeast infection in my guts because of all the bubbling and gas. We'll see. Maybe its all this stupid abscess though. Grr...
