Just got my most recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association...thought I'd share a tidbit I read in the "medical news and perspectives" section:
"'There are a number of chronic diseases for which there is tantalizing, piecemeal, reasonable evidence of microbial factors playing some kind of role,' said David Relman, MD, of Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, Calif, who is probing the role of microorganisms in inflammatory bowel disease. Relman's laboratory is using DNA sequencing techniques to analyze the microbes present in intestinal tissues from patients with Crohn disease. 'The organisms that show up with relative abundance in Crohn's are distinct from those typically found in [healthy tissue],' said Relman. Those abundant organisms may not be the direct cause of the disease, but they may be a microbial marker of the disease process. 'There's an argument to be made that it's a disturbed [microbial] community that's contributing to the pathology,' he noted."

Thanks for posting that, Sarita! I always enjoy reading these updates and really appreciate those of you who take time to post them.
My immediate thoughts were: good to know they're following Dr. John Hermon-Taylor's lead. Too bad they (Dr. Relman or the AMA) don't give credit to him, as he as others have been doing DNA sequencing on MAP in people w/Crohn's for several years now...

One of the reasons I've been so intrigued by Enzo's Alequel therapy, a autologus vaccine made from your own intestinal "bacteria" (taken by biopsy).

Gads, I've posted some here in the past. I'm not sure there was anything at DDW 2007 about
it and didn't check the schedule for DDW 2008 as I've had company from Texas here the last two weeks and was gone to Mayo, etc. Just had other things on my mind and wasn't even thinking of DDW 2008. *sigh*
Enzo something or other is the company name. autologous vaccine and Crohn's might bring it up in a google or PubMed search. I'm pretty sure I am spelling it right, Alequel. Try some of those search terms. Sorry I'm not more help but I haven't been doing much "crohn's-wise" the last year or so as far as keeping up on stuff.
