I met with a surgeon yesterday - may have to go in next week. Has anyone had a strictureplasty? It can only be done if there's not active disease in my stricture, which I highly doubt the way I've been flaring. This will be my 3rd surgery, so there is concern about ending up with short bowel syndrome if a resection needs to be done. He also talked about laparoscopic surgery.

Oldcrohnie..... am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.... . Hope all goes well for you next week. Will he be doing more testing before he goes ahead with the surgery..or have you had all the necessary "ruling out flaring" tests already?
Hope you get some answers soon and start feeling better. Summer is coming and wouldn't it be nice if you could enjoy it without any symptoms or pain.

Hey Oldcrohnie, I understand the dilemma you are going thru, I have had 2 resections, still have some absorbable intestine left, but not much. I too am avoiding surgery, but since I am on Humira and doing well, I am happy about that. Stay strong, I know it is hard, I have had crohns 30 years as well. I think I remember hearing one time this was a young persons disease, well, I aint young. Prayers are there for you!

Thank you all so much for your well wishes. I am waiting to talk to the surgeon to get his take on all this after he looks at my test results and consults with my GI. My GI just kind of said, oh yeah, time for surgery, and passed me off to the surgeon. I will definitely be looking for a new doctor after this is settled, probably one referred by the surgeon, since he seems much more interested in my case than my GI.

Sorry I cant help much .I have had something like what you are calling strictureplasty , but it was done to my esophagus. Hope all goes well for you though and let us know how you are doing..

Lay a hose on its side, cut a horizontal slice in it, now sew the sides of that horizontal slice together vertically. You get a considerably widened area in the hose at that point. Voila! Strictureplasty.

Now you see WHY they can't do a strictureplasty if the disease is active at the time in the area. HOWEVER, symptoms aren't necessarily the result of active disease in that area. The symptoms could be the result of a high-grade partial obstruction in the area so that they COULD do a strictureplasty there even if there is active disease in another area.
