Sore mouth and methotrexate??

I have been on Methotrexate for about 3 weeks now, well 3 doses, and for the past few days, my entire mouth, tongue, is very tender and it feels raw and I have a metallic taste in my mouth.  I am really tired too.  Has this happened to those of you who are also on it?

Are you taking folic acid??? The doctor should prescribe a certain amount for you to take daily. The MTX uses up this nutrient and lack of it can cause mouth sores. Folic Acid also protects your heart from a possible problem from the mtx. Sorry you are having trouble. Blessings!

Gargling several times a day with salty water might help.

You need to take the folic acid it will get rid of the mouth sores and the fatigue. If you are taking some take more and see if that helps. Folic Acid is a water soluable vitamin which means their is very little danger of taking too much. I take 3 mgs per day and it eliminated my mouth sores and my fatigue. The folic acid will be even more important as your mtx dose is increased. I hope you feel better soon and that the mtx ends up helping you.

Thank you, thank you!!!  I am going to get some Folic Acid tomorrow and start taking it!  I am kind of surprised my doctor didn't mention getting the folic acid, but I don't think she usually prescribes MTX either.

Long story on the doctor(s)! Basically, I see an Internist and I have Scleritis and it flared up again 3 weeks ago. My Opthalmologist wanted me to start on the MTX instead of being off and on Prednisone every few months. Anyhow, he suggested me seeing the Rheumy I saw to get the MTX dosage right and I asked my Internist and she does not think too much of the Rheumy I saw (long story) and so she decided to prescribe it herself. Luckily, the 2nd GI diagnosed me with Crohn's and I have the small capsule done this coming Wednesday and after he finds out if I have small bowel disease, he will treat the Crohn's (wherever it is) and he seems to think I might be able to get off the pred and the MTX.

My Internist did say I will have to have blood tests and lung function tests every 3 months while on the MTX. She also said it takes the MTX about two months to start working. I am just hoping that if treating the Crohn's does not help me with the eye problems, that the MTX will. I am not the best of company when I am on prednisone to be honest. :)

Geeze, I feel like just getting down to the bottom of all of this has been a long journey!!!
