does anyone else ever deal with heart palpitations? from researching it seems it's fairly common and no need for alarm. i think the thing that bothers me the most is sometimes exerting myself seems to bring them on or make them worse. like yesterday i went for a walk, i didn't notice any palpitations before my walk but not far into my walk i noticed them. i almost feel faint for a second. maybe it's just stress? but this also happened last summer and they went away on their own. to describe what they feel like, it literally feels like my heart skips a beat. like it stops, then i feel a rush and my heart beats again.

just curious if anyone has had a similar experience.

I experience the heart palpitations everynow and then randomly.  As you described them too - "it literally feels like my heart skips a beat".  Beyond stress, I've been told this can sometimes happen from too much caffine intake as well.

24/F - dx w/ crohn's May 2008 - 50mg 6MP daily

thanks for the reply riss! i am virtually caffeine free. hardly ever do i have any since my diagnosis. but, i am stressed due to being real low on cash, bills are getting backed up but thankfully i am starting a new job next week. maybe it's just stress then? we'll see what happens when i get settled in at the new job.

Yes, I've experianced quite a bit of symptoms related to heart palpatations, the intense heart beat like it wants to beat right out of my chest along with the difficulty catching my breath, the shooting pain that starts in my neck and moves into my head...my GP said that EVERYONE gets heart palpatations and that some people like me happen to feel the results of having them and that it's perfectly safe, just uncomfortable and of course scary until you learn that it's not harmful...he said there were meds for it because it sets of panic attacks for some people but I told him I just learned to regulate it with deep breathing and it goes away fairly quickly as a result.

Of course, like I did you too should always double check with your doc to make sure that's all it is and that there isn't something eles actually going on...better to be safe than sorry.

thanks so much pb :) once i get my new insurance figured out i will definitely have my doc have a listen. it is quite scary at times, especially when i talked to a bunch of people and no one has had what i am experiencing!

thanks for the reassurance that i am most likely, just normal. have a great fourth!

I too get them sometimes. For me things like heart burn, stress, being tired, can trigger them. The more you pay attention to them the more you get I've found. When I relax about them, and don't think about it they stop. I've seen my doctor a few times for them, and he never seems concerned. But it's always a good idea to bring it up with them, especially if your concerned (or having other symptoms with them too).

ohh, interesting. i had severe heartburn for almost a week straight! i finally got rid of it yesterday. and stress? oh boy am i stressed.

No problem! :) But yeah my heart burn really plays a role for some reason. It's weird, but seems to be the case!

I have had this happen when I was taking decongestants-I took them exactly as prescribed for three days and the whole time I was having palpatations and skipping beats-I ended up in the ER after almost passing out in the middle of a class (I was in grad school) my prof made me go to the ER-a ltitle scary-they told me to never take decongestants again.
I would always get any new symptoms checked out once checked I would ask the doc when do I need to see you about this again or tell you about it (meaning-do I call everytime it happens, only if it gets worse-never?).

dustspeck--the heartburn for a week with the palpitations worries me. These are symptoms women especially ignore for heart trouble. Hopefully, you just have anemia, premature atrium or ventrium contractions or it's just stress. Please call doc and at least ask about the symptoms. If you have any vomiting, numbness, tingling, or shortness of breath get to the ER immediately.

that all being said, I have had the palpitations and they turned out to be premature atrium contractions due to my anemia and crohn's. Cardiac doc gave me a baby dose of a beta blocker which really helped. He also told me to get exercise and watch caffeine.

Again, please be careful.

I never had heartburn issues during, before or after my heart palpatations...be sure to see your doc about this.

See I know my heart burn was just that, heart burn. Due to the things that I ate that gave it to me! I've also seen my doctor about my palps, he wasn't concerned, but also did an EKG. So it's not something I worry about anymore. But I agree it's good to get it checked to be sure.

I have had problems with Atrial Fibrillation before. A-Fib is a rapid irregular heartbeat. Mine is caused when I throw up alot, for some odd reason it causes my heart to freak out. I had an obstruction episode once and went to the ER. They were more concerned with my A-Fib than my obstruction. I had to suffer in pain for a bit so they could get my heart back under control.

I also suggest you bring this to your doctors attention asap. Could be something serious or not, but better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

I too have have Atrial Fibrillation. I started having the palpitations for years before having the A-Fib. I did go to the doctor and was told that I had Mitral Valve Prolapse, like millions of othe people. The palpitations increased over time. Finally a couple of summers ago it seemed to happen even more and the palpitations lasted longer and longer. Then my heart literally got stuck in this extremely fast beating - about 400 beats per minute. It was very scary and I had to go to the ER. I was put on lots of medication and after a while my heart went back to normal. Now I am back to having the palpitations once in a while again.

My doctor told me that if the A-Fib begins again, that I should cough very hard (which I do naturally when I feel the palpitations) to try to shock the heart back to normal. So, try the coughing, but definately have your doctor check things out.

But also keep in mind that palps are very common, and can also mean nothing at all serious. Not saying it isn't a good idea to have it checked out (I know I wanted to, if anything for my piece of mind). It can mean something more serious, especially if it comes with chest pain, trouble breathing ect.. My heart rate is at a normal speed (under 100 bpm) when I get the palps. So mine hasn't been related to A-FIB. Mine is most likely skipped beats, which is very common. But still, always good to run it by the doctor.

For the past week I could feel my heart pounding, was feeling faint and dizzy. I thought, no worries, it's just stress. My body is telling me to slow down and relax. When I went into my PCP and the nurse took my blood pressure it was 160! My norm is upper 90s. My point here, pay attention to your body. I knew I was under a great deal of stress with the flare and work and money situation, but I had no idea that it put my blood pressure so high. Thankfully, my PCP quickly prescribed my anti-panic pills. Going forward I am paying closer attention to my heart rate. I feel better now. I re-cooped for a couple of days and finally got back on food as well (went 8 days without). Yesterday I hauled my horse out on a trail ride!! {{happy place... happy place}} If my heart ever gets to pounding like that again, it's off to the PCD immediately. Stress is the enemy!

sj- i don't take decongestants for that reason alone. it makes me bonkers! if i absolutely have to take them i take 1/2 the recommended dose.

sammies - i am on iron for my anemia. i haven't really had any other symptoms but the heartburn, which i eventually squashed. i will be sure to watch out for other signs. thanks so much for the info!

nanners - that is awful you had to go through that :( thanks so much, will update if i find anything more out!

potatoqwn - oddly enough, when i feel the force of blood flow after mt heart skips a beat, it will sometimes automatically make me cough. wonder why that is??

texan - i saw my gi about 2 weeks ago and the nurse took my blood pressure. i think it was 90-something over 60, which is about normal for me. i still have some ativan for anxiety that i could take to see if that helps. it seems to make me tired so i haven't tried it to see if it helps. maybe tonight though! thanks and so glad to hear you are feel better and eating some food!!

You may want to check your Potassium levels. I have a fluttery heart every once in a while, I had it checked out and my Potassium level was really low. Low potassium effect the heart muscle and causes an irregular beat. A simple blood check well tell what is up. yeah    good luck. -Jamie
