Maintenance drug - 6MP

On May 15th I had a resection to remove a stricture that I’ve been living with for 2 years and I also had an abscess removed. (I think the abscess was my major problem.) The surgeon said everything else looks good and he saw no other signs of crohn’s  when he was in there. Anyway, now my G.I. doctor wants to put me on 6MP as a maintenance drug.

Anyone in this same situation?

Anyone taking anything different?

i am currently on 6mp, possibly going to see surgeon in the next 6 months and even though i haven't been 100% successful with 6mp (possibly due to scar tissue) my gi would like to keep me on it after my resection as a maintenance med. so yes, i have heard of it :) he would like me to be on 6mp or some other med i am not familiar with ...i think it started with an M.

I had a resection in April. My GI wanted me to be on Imuran and my surgeon thought Pentasa would be adequate. To my knowledge, the studies have been equivocal as to whether any of these drugs actually prolong remission and prevent recurrence (I could be wrong about this though), so I decided to go with my surgeon's recommendation and I'm taking Pentasa, because the potential side effects and risks are less severe than Imuran's. If I have a recurrence, my GI told me he'd recommend I go back on Humira.

I had abcess after abcess and they would not heal - 6 surgeries later and after Remicaide I started 6 MP.  It is now my "drug of choice".  I have been on it for about 5 years now with no problems or side effects and the abcesses are long gone history.  I have bloodwork done every three months to keep a check on things and once a year for liver enzymes.  I also take Pentasa, but was on it for a couple years before the 6MP.  Together they seem to do the trick for me.

Ski bum,

Studies are equivocal about the effectiveness of Pentasa (and other 5-ASA meds) in prolonging remission, but studies are quite clear (unequivocal) about the effectiveness of 6MP/Imuran.

I have been on 6mp for several months here and there (due to pregnancy and adverse effects). I love it. Even though some days I have symptoms of crohns, I never get the terrible pain like I did before starting 6mp. And I don't get the fevers, joint pain and skin inflammation. I have even been able to stop the asacol which with 4 kids under 5 was awesome. It was very stressful taking asacol 3x a day!

I have had two resections myself. After the 2nd one they tried me on 6mp, but it didn't work out for me. I only take Asacol now. Its working well to keep the inflammation down for "me".

By the way SallyC, I take my Asacol twice a day. 3 caplets in the morning and 3 at night. I would forget the afternoon dose if I didn't take it like that, and my GI said twice a day was okay.
