How do you distinguish inflammation blood?

Let's say intermittent bright red blood fresh on the tissue and some specs on the stool coupled with no Diarrhoea and no pain= Internal Hemmorrhoids.

How would one distinguish blood that is coming from a flair up/inflammation in the colon?

Red blood coating stool or mixed in with it is more likely from the colon. Darker, clotted or black blood in the same format is from higher up, in the small bowel, or even the stomach. And your description of blood from internal hemmies is probably accurate.

It would be a very dark red/maroon or black in color. Much darker than the bright red usually associated with hemi's.

It is my understanding that the darker the blood, the higher up in the system it came from....When I see bright red blood, I always just assume it is a hemorrhoid.

I am curious to what other folks have to say.

either way, just let your doc know. Right now, for me, it's primarily anal rectal disease...yeah also had it in the colon, and most of the time, it was bright red... when it was more in the colon(sigmoid), it was still red, but more mucus...at least for me. Just make sure your doc knows so she/he can rule out anything else (fissures, fistula, etc.).

My GI says colin blood is more clotted, usually maroon and you can tell it isn't bright red and fresh even if it comes from the rectum. If it coats the stool then it will coat all stools not just the odd one or two...

He said if it show streaks (like lines) on the stool then it is almost certainly a hemmorrhoid. But the key is intermittent (few days on, few dayd off) no pain and no diarrhoea for inflammation. I hope I have that's accurate.

I am depressed. Everytime I think I am in remission I get bright red blood in the tissue and a little on the stool and I freak out. I dont have diarrhoea but do have a lot of gas. I even go to the toilet and nothing comes out but gas! I have been eating a lot of fruit lately, could that cause it? I am having 2-4 BM's a day.

The medication is controlling your symptoms, so you are not in remission yet. I think once you are off the steroids and you remain symptom free you can consider your self in remission. What kind of fruit are you eating? When I eat citrus types of fruit it really gives me gas and a upset stomach. So that could be your problem. Also, are you taking any kind of probiotic? That will help if you have an overgrowth of bad bacteria.

I am taking pro-biotic and he fruits I ate were near raw mango and bananas on an empyt stomach this morning. I have had cramps all day. As for the meds, I have the same about of BM's really except they have solidified a little.
