OT about IKE

  Old Ike has put the two in the one two punch here. Flood waters came in and are higher than from Rita. Our house did not flood but only by the smallest of margins. I spent until dark last night picking up decomposing dead fish from my still flooded yard. This will be a daily thing with the tides bringing in more each high tide.  Rains did not stop yesterday and are still going on today. We are hoping for some better weather tomorrow . We need some to get the water down enough to clean up the mess. Still have damage from Gustave but now the roof damage is overshadowed by the two feet of salt water that is in my shed. My wife found the store shelves bare last night but managed to score a can of biscuits. We are having to conserve water because of salt water intrusion. We dont want to make a mess in the kitchen that need to be cleaned up so meals will be conservative too. I told her as long as she didn't bring home fish sticks all else was fine.

Sniper, start cooking up those fish that wash up! J/K. I hope you had enough food in the house before the storm. And plenty of TP.

Glad to hear you are okay and surviving another one. Lets hope and pray this is it for 2008!

Oh Sniper, I'm so pleased you're house stood up to the battering it must have took.... You make ms feel so helpless, I wish there was
something we could do to help.
BTW, tropical storm Ike came marching through the midwest yesterday. Had rain coming through the roof in places, and quite a few tree
limbs down. That was bad enough, I can't imagine what it must have been like as a hurricane!!

      Yeah, the only good news for you Sniper is that you weren't closer to my state. Galveston, Tx. is down for the count. I don't know what happened near Mission control at Nasa but I'm guessing thatss NOT PRETTY either. What a mess! Unfortunately, people thought it was another false alarm there, like Rita was. NOT THIS TIME..

fitzy, i know your suggestion to eat the fish was meant with good will but thats not too safe. you dont know what they injested prior to dying and what contamination they swam through ... good thought though;-).

Yeah, we got lots of Ike's rain, nothing to speak of in terms of wind, flood watches last night for most of our and surrounding counties but no problems for us - as long as the ole sump pump keeps running. I haven't checked this morning if the flood watches have abated for this area or not. We're dry and I'm grateful for and content w/that.

Times like this we are ever so grateful for generators and sump pumps and no city sewers!!! Neighboring towns have had sewers back up into homes - storm sewers handle waste as well as rain and flood waters. The city of Flint, terribly stressed by the downfall and pull out of so many GM plants and jobs, has ordered out emergency crews to help residents clean out the filth in their basements. Something I don't remember ever being done before. Cleaning out and opening storm sewers yes but actually helping w/the clean up IN private homes .... ??? First I've ever heard of any town in this state doing so!

By the way: I never have been particularly fond of sea food or fish - but if I'd gone thru what you have so many times - ha! Sea food and fish wouldn't be good for anything but fertilizing our garden!!! I sure as the devil would never be able to eat it!!!

Sniper - it was totally a joke to fry up the fish. I'm sure now is not the time for joking. Sorry!! How are the peoples pets doing this time around. Were the evacuees allowed to take them with them? I send my prayers to all of you.

Fish make  great fertilizer, maybe you can bury one under each plant you have and have nice looking plants next year  (I guess they are probably diseased so might not be a good idea though)   People buy fish fertilizer as an organic gardening fertilizer :) Good Luck! Well Fitzy, when I saw all those dead fish in my yard I almost made some crohns poop. My new yard dog, about a four foot gator , has been munching on some though. Just doing his part to help out. We got the humming bird feeders back up the day after we came home and we have lots of hummers now. Guess most of their flowers are gone so we are helping them . They sure do put on a show when there are that many. One even came right up to me this evening as I read an instruction booklet, much as I hate them I had to buy a leaf blower. The book was red and I guess she was hunting for food. Had to be the red because I sure dont smell like flowers. The water is about 10 feet from being back in the banks of the bayou but it is taking a long time to get back. There were lots of homes flooded up from us. Some very nice subdivisions went under with water all the way up over the mail boxes. We are very lucky to just have what we have to deal with. I started pulling things out of my tool shed today. Putting oil on all the tools as this water is salty and rust is already starting. I dont know why they got in my shed but there is a ton of dead earth worms on the floor of my shed and they are all in the mud. Most are dead but some are still kicking. I could get all I need to go fishing,,ahh,,but,,all the fish are dead, and I may never eat a fish again..

I bet with all those birds and fish you will be attracting all the cats in town. I'm glad there were better procedures this time around for the pets. I obviously care for the humans but worry so much for the pets that can't help themselves and wonder where their loved ones went. I'm glad your neighbors cat made it. I will ask St. Francis to watch over the farm animals you mentioned.

Yep, it must be wormicide or mass wormhysteria. I have not seen so many worms sense I was a kid and sawed through an old air conditioner we were hauling off only to find it was charged with ammonia. Worms were flying up out of the ground, I was running for cover up wind. I killed my moms rose bush and all the grass in the area. It would have been better if I had not tried to lighten the load in that case.
Yesterday one of my neighbors was walking down near the bayou in about a foot of water when he almost stepped on my new pet gator. The little gator took off with a splash of its tail and my neighbor almost made a mess in his pants. I dont think he will be testing the waters in my yard again. I almost fell down laughing and that would have been messy too as I was in about knee deep water at the time. You have to find something to smile about in times like these.
