Sensitive teeth?

Hi there,

My teeth have become VERY sensitive the past few weeks.  I have started using Sensodyne toothpaste but it isn't really helping.  I have been taking prednisone for a long time now and Imuran. 

Can prednisone make your teeth sensitive?  I have heard it can "break them down" so I am guessing it can?  Anyone else had this?

I have had some problems and use the sensitive toothpaste when they act up sometimes they are fine. As far as the pred. causing it I am not sure. lol gail

Do you have a problem with acid? like reflux? I didn't think I really had a big problem, but I asked my dentist about my teeth being so sensitive and he said it could likely be from acid because of the way that it was wearing. Just an idea.

My teeth also have become really sensitive here in the last few weeks, I wondered if that was from the prednisone or what. I also have acid reflux, taking prilosec for it.

Pred can defintiely destroy the teeth. But so can malnutrition/malabsorption. Then you have the "normal" bone loss from pred and calcium deficiency.

I was on prednisone for 2 years and just recently weaned off. I have lost 4 teeth over that time, my dentist blamed the steroids. He explained it by saying the risks to your bones (osteoperosis) and teeth are basically bones. The teeth didn't just fall out they gradually crumbled. That's one of the many reasons I'm so thankful to be off the pred. It's horrible that a drug that can do so much for most people's quality of life has so many nasty side effects. I guess just something we have to accept. Hope that helps.

My teeth are a mess.

I have begged them to pull them but my $$ motivated dentist figured it was best to crown every tooth possible..

The meds do nothing good for the teeth...  And the physical effects of this disease are almost as bad ie: demineralization etc...

Thanks everyone!

I do have acid reflux and I take Prilosec OTC 20mg a day for that.

My teeth still feel about the same, no better no worse. I have been on prednisone for almost a year now (everytime I try to get off, I end up back on it) and maybe that is affecting my teeth now...ugh!

I have a cleaning next month at the dentist...I was going to cancel (I am SOOO sick of doctors and getting poked and prodded) but maybe I will keep it and have them looked at anyways.

I won't tell you how much I have spent just this year on my teeth! And I have dental insurance. So far I had a $500 bill and now I'm paying off a $200 bill from a root canal, and then I'm going to have a $400 bill from the stupid crown I had to get put on the root canal tooth. My teeth are horrible.
One tooth I actually have a implant that I got done a few years ago. I keep wanting them to just pull all my teeth out and give me all implants.
But my dentist won't listen to me. lol

Normally my teeth are not sensitive. However, recently I took an 8 week course of Entocort (tapered) and my teeth were sensitive while I was on it. Now that I'm a few weeks off of it, my teeth are no longer sensitive.
