i have uc was diagnosed in 03 but i smoke so didnt flare to bad. well i dont smoke anymore and i'm flaring but i have bad soreness throughout my body, could this be part of my flare?

Hi Pamela, yes, I believe it can. I have random aches and pains when my CD flares up. If you need some relief or feel uncertain about what you're experiencing, though, call your doctor.

Pamela, I believe there is some correlation between nicotine and UC. You might want to post this on the Ulcerative Colitis BB for more information on this topic. I think it has been discussed there before. The best of luck to you! Blessings, Julie:)

I was diagnosed with UC quite awhile ago, although now, my Drs. think I may have Crohn's. Anyways, I used to smoke and when I did, I'd completely go off my sulfasalazine for long periods of time and would be symptom free. In January, I asked my GI Dr. to prescribe Chantix so I could quit smoking and he wanted me on my medication for several months prior to quitting because the lack of smoking, probably the nicotine, could lead to a flare up. That being said, be careful! I experienced a major flare up this summer after quitting smoking and May and ended up in the hospital for a long, expensive stay.

And about the aches and pains. Yes, I experienced them too. My knees and back would drive me crazy. I felt like I was 62 rather than 32.
I'd get back on your colitis medication ASAP.

the thing is i dont have a gi doc. here in charleston wv they are weird. my gi doc moved to florida and took my records with him.now no other gi doc wants to take me back here. so i have to depend on my regular doc to help me and he dont really know how to handle this. but i can say this is the worst flare i have ever had. i just pray to god to make it stop. sometimes i just want to start smoking til i get it under control then start some kind of med.

thanks i'm trying to hang in there, it's hard to explain to my kids that i'm real sick right now. they knew i had this awful disease but i never got like this from where i smoked. now they see what it's doing to me. i do have one other question though can i be flaring still bad if i dont go to the bathroom constantly? but i still have bloody mucus and cramping off and on and the joint soreness.

Pamela: I actually went to the Crohns and Colitis Symposium in So San Francisco over last weekend and they talked about smoking and Crohns/Colitis. Interestingly enough, smoking increases problems with Crohns, BUT! it seems to lessen the Colitis. Go figure. This doesn't mean that all Colitis people should start smoking :) As a long time sufferer of Crohns, all I can say is ya never know when this disease will rear its ugly head. Just when I think I feel all normal, WAM! it's not so normal anymore. Best of luck to you.

yea if you are expericncing soem symptoms of a flare and not others doesnt mean ur not in a flare,i get really sore joints in a flare adn pins and needles in my face

Charleston, WV, huh? Yep, nothing up there in WV but mountains and long winding roads. Lived Charleston and Wheeling for a few months. I would track down that GI doc for medical records and take a drive over to Ohio.
