Scar Healing

I just had a bowel resection on October 1st and am looking for suggestions as to what I can put on my incision to help it heal the best.  The incision is about 5 inches long next to my belly button.  I know my bikini modeling career is over (ha ha), but I am young and don't want a horrible scar visible in the summer time.  My surgeon did an incredible job and its already healing well.  He told me to put vitamin E lotion on it.  That's what I have been doing.  I have heard products like Mederma are a rip off.

Any thoughts?  Thank you!!!!!

My plastic/hand surgeon had me use Vitamin E cream on my fingers to help reduce the scars. I had the joints on two fingers opened completely to take out large cysts that had caused open holes in my knuckles. they looked awful prior to the surgery. I can only find them with a magnifying glass now.
