My doctor recommended I eat Activia everyday for the Probiotics. I started eating it and noticed I was going to the bathroom constantly. I had a bowel resection on October 1st and am currently in remission. Pre-surgery when my crohns was super active I was going to the bathroom ten times a day at least. The first two weeks post-surgery I was only going once. But now on the Activia its like I am back to using the bathroom a lot. So I cut down the Activia to every three days and the same thing. The day I eat it, I am running to the bathroom every twenty minutes. Anyone else had the same reaction to it?
Forgive me for venting for a moment....ugh!!!!!... The vast majority of doctors know nothing about
probiotics. Activia has as it's one and only probiotic strain something called Bifidus Regularis (stupid made up name), which is a "unique strain of bifidobacteria." Since it has affected you in this way, please, please stop taking it!!!
Elaine Gottschall (a microbiologist and founder of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet) studied the effects of food in the intestines at the cellular level. After all her research on probiotics she said if you're going to take a probiotic, choose one WITHOUT bifidobacteria or bifidus. I trust her judgment here far beyond any doctor's.
If you are going to eat yogurt, try the home made version put forth by the SCD (and Elaine Gottschall). It is lactose free which is good for all Crohnies, cheap (I make a 2 liter container for about
$3.50), has 4 times the amount of beneficial bacteria than any store bought yogurt you can buy, and has the RIGHT KIND of beneficial bacteria.
Also, as Nanners recommended, if you are buying a probiotic supplement in capsule form, try one with Lactobacillus acidophilus as the main strain. Also choose one with at least 10-15 billion cfu (colony forming units).
