prednisone - how quick did it show results for you?

Hi Guy's,

with regards to prednisone- how quick, if at all, did this drug show results for you? The reason I ask is reather simple. I have been on it three days now, and I have to say, since I started it I feel about 50% better, and improving as we speak. I this normal for the drug? Or, could it be because this is my first turn at it, my body will accept it?

Also, how quick did you start to show side effects? I am not showing any of them at all.

Pred is a very powerful drug, which is why it 'cures crohns' but also causes osteoporosis, diabetes, cataracts, adrenal failure, AVN (joint bone death) etc. etc. etc., so yes you should be feeling better.

What dose are you taking? It would be helpful for you to do up a small signature with your meds, history, etc so people will be able to give better responses.

Hi Rider Fan,

Thanks for the quick reply. They are really working well for me. Do they put you into total remission, without it coming back? Or, will it come back shortly after you stop them? I am still feeling the pain in my stomach but not half as bad as it was. Also, the joints in my body still really hurt, but I am not expecting miracles.

I am on 50ng of the drug.

It will probably come back if you stop the prednisone, but you can't take pred forever. So ask your doc about a maintenance medication.

I was feeling 100% better within about a week to 10 days. But started seeing results with in just a few days.

I take Asacol as a maintenance drug, always have the last few years. You still have your flare up's, no matter what eventually. But the pred put me in remission, and hopefully the Asacol will keep me there for a while. That is always the hope!

WOW, thats excellent Jen77. How long where you on them? Did it put you into remmission long term? Or did it come back to you in no time after stopping them? Did you have any of the nasty side effects that people report on them?

The prednisone can put you in remission. It didn't for me though. It does make me feel 100% Crohn's wise when I'm on it, but all the other side effects it does on me are horrible so doc really tries to keep me off it. :-( And yes it usually works within days.

I was on 100mg IV for 2 weeks in the hospital, and then for 2 months out of the hospital before I could even start tapering, my body didnt respond to it all at in the hospital but once I was out it started to kick in, I was 200% for about 3 weeks crohns wise, then the nasty little side effects started to kick in hardcore!! Now I'm down to 10mg, tomorrow I will be down to 5, then 1mg taper a week after that.  I have a love hate relationship with pred, it nearly deformed my face from the puffiness I cried everytime I looked in the mirror, but now I have a chin again!!!

I have gone into remission after having my prednisone withdrawn VERY SLOWLY so you never know

I was on them for about 3 months. Tapering down after about 3 weeks. Once I was off I've maintained a remission. As far as side effects go, I had tons of energy (which isn't a bad thing for me!), but I was super hungry all the time and did put on about 15 pounds. But that really was a small price to pay for going back in to remission, I was having a bad flare.

Getting off them was not fun, I had to go back up around 5 mg due to getting super bad migraines and feeling kinda sick. My doctor gave me a better slower taper that worked perfectly for getting off of them.

Excellent news guys,

I can onl;y hope for the same results. I am praying for them in fact. Today has not been so good, back at work and hurting like hell. Awh well, the joys.

I am one of the lucky ones. I am always able to take Pred for a course and it always puts in remission. I like Jen77 am able to maintain my remission by using Asacol as a maintainence med. I also agree its best to taper slowly. Most of my tapers were down 5 mg per week and when I got to like 10 mg I started going down 2.5 mg a week. Good luck!!

Hey Guy's,

after what seemed lkike three excellent days without much pain, it has come back with a passion. Is this the normal for this drug? Does it take pain away and it comes back as quick? I have only been on the drug from thursday but it was working well. I did go back to workm today and that might not have helped being sat in an office all cramped up. I am thinking of applying for diability long term until I get this DD under ontrol.

Usually, once I'm on pred my flare is gone (until the next one whenever that may be) I normally don't get worse unless the taper is too fast. Also, it usually gives me immediate relief at a dosage that high.

I am newly diagnosed, as in October. I have been hospitalized several time for Ileitis this year, but my FORMER GI doc always brushed it off as just gastroenteritis, despite what the CT Scans showed. Needless to say, I now have a wonderful GI doc in DC who said without a doubt I have Crohn's (finally a dx after 2.5 yrs) put me on 40mg of the Prednisone and yes, within days I was feeling like a new woman! Two weeks later I was tapered down to 30mg's, still felt good, but my face began to swell...along with the rest of my body, and still is. I've gained 17 lbs so far and my sunglasses leave marks on the sides of my face :( I'm now tapered down to 20mg's and had a flare-up two weeks ago. The pain wasn't as bad as it had been previously, but the diarrhea has come back with a vengeance. I just had another small bowel series done on fri, going to the doc tomorrow with my films...he mentioned possibly removing my ileum...very nervous. I guess Prednisone is only good for some people... oh and I definitely know what they mean by "Roid Rage!" lol.

It sounds like you had a time of it with this DD. I can only hope the your remission has carried on. Also, I was getting results with Pred until I went to work and now my whole body hurts. Espically my tummy and my upper track. I am going to speak to my doctor this afternoon about coming out of work for a while to enable me to get recovered and ontop of this DD. Wish me luck!

i was on it for 2 weeks and showed no improvement whatsoever...i dont think it helped me at all and will only take it again if i try it for a few days...if it's going to work it will work within a week...i didnt get the puffy face until about being on it for 2 months..but i got the terrible night sweats/insomnia within a few weeks of being on it..the puffy face came after being on it for about 2 months...it works for most people but not for all...

ImAud, why did they keep you on it so long if you where not getting results with it? Is it a case of trail and error? Does the drug normally work for everyone? Or, with more severe chrons, is it a ase of give it tme to work? It sound like you got it really hard with your chrons and I am sorry to hear that!

My doctor has written me of work for three months for now to get some time to heal and get my body working again. He did offer me 6 months, but if the drugs did not make me kill myself, that will. LOL...

they kept me on it because i was sick and not getting better...they just kept me on it cuz it wasn't like they were gonna just stop giving me meds and hope i would get better on my own..which is why i think i got better to begin with lol..bowel rest and i think the remicade too...it is trial and error with this disease i've come to learn..u try one thing and if it doesnt work u go with another lol..i think prednisone normally works for alot of people, but drugs like remicade and humeria claim they work for people who haven't responded to steroids, so there are people out there that it doesn't work for, or it just takes extremely high doses for a long period of time to work! my crohn's is severe so maybe yes, it needs time to work, but please don't let urs get as bad as mine did! i got diagnosed and suffered for 2 weeks when i should have rushed myself to an ER! i was losing blood like crazy and in soooooo much pain...i could barely get up in the morning...dont ever let it get that bad!

Hi ImAud,

that sounds sooooo bad. I am really sorry you went through that. I hope you are on the road to recovery. I have only started the pred and it has not kicked in yet, but my GI said for severe chrons, it takes a while to kick in. Just like yourself. I am just pretty desperate to get my life back and family life returned to normal. I am due back at the GI on the 4th 12 so heres hoping!

conorconan1, dont worry u will get better and things will get back to normal! my life is finally starting to get somewhat back to normal..it's definitely much better than it was a few months ago! it just takes some time, but once it's all figured out u will be happy and healthy :)

Thankyou. That is nice encourgement for me. I only hope that it does not get worse before better. I am currently having a Urinary Track Infection and that is not nice. However, the pain has settled down a bit for me today, rash is going as well. Hopefully, the pred is starting to take good effect for me now. Fingers crossed and everything else that I can cross. LOL...

Dont worry! it doesnt have to get worse before u get better! and im sorry u have a UTI..they are the worse! i got my first one a few years ago and was in soooo much pain :( it sucks when u have to deal with a bunch of things wrong with u at the same time! i had my period while i was in the hospital lol..so blood was coming out from all places as disgusting as that is lol..it totally sucked! but like i said just stay positive and remember if the prednisone doesn't work there are other treatments out there like remicade and humira that work for alot of people! good luck :)
