Why does Crohn's cause joint pain?

 What do u do when u have joint pain that comes and goes whenever it pleases. R there any natural food things that may help take the pain away or make it go away? Sometimes the pain moves from right & left hip, right knee and foot. Dr's wont give me prednisone anymore and meloxicam isn't the best either. Any ideas please. I need to be on feet a lot at work and it's really getting to be unbearable. Thanks. idea

I don't have an answer to this question actually was planning on posting one very similar to this. My joint pain from Crohn's and from joint deteration from long term steriod use causes me the most problems. They can usually get my trips to the restroom under control as well as have me putting on plenty of weight lol but the joint pain is relentless. I'll be watching this post for answers!! Take Care!

Hi Just a thought here but do you take calcium and vitaminD ? Seems we are acceptable to osteo so getting some good bone supplement might help. Viamin D is often low also with crohn's from what I been reading tonight. lol gail

Well, Crohn's is an autoimmune disease... and considering it mostly effects the intestines (the home of the immune system, if you will) it can cause a lot of side complications... Like joint pain...

At least, that's how I understand it. As for how to get the pain to go away... Well, sometimes rubbing some Vicks vapor rub on the affected joints at night time can help a little bit...

Otherwise, I'm just as stuck with this stupid pain as you are... :(

IBD can cause extra intestinal manifestations that are inflammatory responses, inflammation of the eyes, skin, joints. It can also affect the bones (osteo), it's the nature of the beast, it doesn't happen to all IBDers though.

Arg today I experienced my first joint pain! I'm used to other soreness (I have a herniated disc and have had 5-6 stress fractures between my two shins) but I've NEVER had issues with my knees...until today. Not looking forward to this developing...hoping it's just a fluke!

Ahh... How bad was the pain? Did it happen really early in the morning? Sometimes, I get this horrible knee pain really early in the morning... It wakes me up... feels like somebody smashed my knees in...

Check out the "Back/leg pain,opinions please" post. In addition to the suggestions here and there, Candida and permeable gut are associated with Crohn's and joint pain.

Try sleeping with a pillow under your knee at night, it may very well do the trick in making it feel better, it got rid of my knee pain and my lower back pain too.

As to why- presumably whatever causes the attack on the intestines also attacks the joints. If Ebringer is correct and the disease is ultimately rooted in Klebsiella, what happens is that the molecular mimicry between pullulanase (emitted by klebsiella bacteria) and collagen leads to the body's attack on collagen. From there, the intestines are attacked (Crohn's disease) or the collagen of the spine is attacked (ankylosing spondylitis), depending upon whether the individual is HLA-B27 positive or HLA-B27 negative, respectively.

If this is the case, ultimately the solution is to stop eating starch, which in turn causes the klebsiella to stop producing pullulanase. Eventually the antibodies to pullulanase/collagen leave the blood, and the autoimmune reaction stops. Unfortunately, that can take months or years.

Oh yes pb,
Sometimes that feels heavenly. A PT told me to try standing with my feet about six inches apart, and squeeze my bum cheeks together and hold for 10 seconds and repeat several times, in the shower and a few times a day. It seems to help, but then again, as you know, our symptoms like to come and go at will.

So far I have been getting relief when i use moist heat and get off it but i am not sure how i can stay off it all the time until it goes away. Oh well i guess i'll have to wait it out like all the other times. Vicks did help too some tonight. thx for the suggestion.

i usually get joint pain in my elbows adn knees....also siatica (sp) (hip pain) -_- stupid crohns hafnt found nething really to help just heat .

Just fyi I think all Crohnies should see a Rheumatologist too because of our joint issues.

My son was diagnosed with Enthisitis a year after his Chron's diagnosis.  He has joint pains behind his knees and his ankles.  I know that have a med that is like Pentasa that also deals with the joint pains.  We did not switch him due to not wanting to mess up his Chron's.

We do ice, heat, and the more active he is the better.
