Mesalazine is the active ingredient in Mezavant. Mesalazine topically treats the mucosal lining of the intestine. Many people find that their symptoms decrease and the diarrhea slows. There are however a small subset of people that actually have worsening diarrhea with the Mesalazine products. Diarrhea is a known side effect of Mesalazine products.

When I took Pentasa it caused me more D. I now take Asacol (sister med) and no longer have that problem. Another thing that helped with my D was probiotics.

I take both Questran and Immodium for my D. While I'm on Asacol it really never did anything to slow my D down. I think it does help prolong my remissions though, but that's all I'm on it for.
