I believe Entocort is the only drug I have not been on. By the sounds of it is a form of steroid? My question is does it give simular side effects to prednisone (moonface?) What are some people's common side effects from this and has it been successful with you?

I have always found that Entocort has way less systemic side effects for me. When I was on it I didn't get the crazy mood swings or moon face with them. They take a little longer to work than Pred, but they worked well for me when they kicked in. JMHO

Laurylu,
Both Entocort and prednisone are steroids---the difference is that Entocort works mainly in the intestine- only about
10-20% is available outside of the intestine, while prednisone affects the whole body. That's my understanding of it. That could explain the difference in side effects. Entocort has helped me, with few side effects.

Entocort worked very well for me with my last flare. No moonface but did notice while at 9mg I was tired and had a slight headache. Was fine once I went down to 6mg. I love it compared to predinsone!

My dr has had me on Entocorte since June of 05. I cannot tolerate steroids of any kind and he was very reluctant to start me on it because of this problem. But he decided it was worth a shot. He explained to me that 95% of the Entocort is metabolized in the small intestine and that leaves a very small amt free so to speak. I have been on many different sterids in the past for various other illnesses, and no I have not had any of the steroid type problems associated with it, like the others. Susie

Hi, I've just been put back on Entocort because I'm flaring. It hasn't worked for me in the past, but my doc wanted me to give it a try first before putting me back on pred, which has much worse side effects.
I can't remember noticing any side effects the first time I took it, I'll let you know if I have any this time! Of course because it is a drug that acts locally, it is less 'powerful' than pred if you know what I mean which is why it can be ineffective in severe flares.

I do not see any side effects from entocort, but it seems to be less effective than prednisone. When I first started taking it, the pain went away just like it did right away with prednisone. However, the problem was with blood. Right now, I am seeing less and I am hoping it will go away soon.

The main side effect causes a severe drain on my bank account.

When I bought 8 weeks worth, it was over 1000. If you buy it through Canada, it is around 300 or so.

I had to pay 75$ for one month in the US. Needless to say, I had 3 days left of my taper and ran out and was not about
to refill it! I guess it is quite a bit more costly than pred.
