How long is my draining seton going to well, drain? Anyone have any clue? I realize that I just got it less than a week ago, but will this still be draining pus 2 months from now?

I must say however, that this has been relatively painless and pretty easy to live with so far. Put a little pad in there to catch the drainage, swish in sitz bath a couple times a day, long bath before bed. It's not to terrible. And I have found myself a new GI doc that I get to see next month! And since I'm not suppose to lift heavy things, I didn't have to change the 4 litterboxes, so score! tongue My woman even demanded we go shopping today and got me a Buxton bag so I would have plenty of room to carry around gauze pads, butt wipes, books to read and my mp3 player to entertain me if I got stuck in a public restroom. I just want to say, my wife rocks! turn

Hi Jenn,

Glad to hear you are doing so well! If your fistula begins in the rectum, you will continue to see some level of drainage. It sounds like they didn't open the abscess surgically but just installed a seton. So you are probably getting drainage from the abscess site as well as stuff coming through the fistula from the rectum. The abscess drainage will reduce over time as the abscess heals. The fistula may shrink in diameter too, lessening the amount of drainage. My fistula starts in the rectum, and I always get a little bit of liquid stuff draining through. Quite managable really.

I have had a seton for over a year now and to this day it drains just as much as it did when I first got one put in.  In fact I have had to have a few more surgeries for this.  Overall the process is pretty painless, but it does get anoying when a year later you are still draining.  When I asked my doctor about this the first time he said that I would drain for a few months but there is no way to know for certain how long it will last.  So far we are going on to month 16. I dont know if I am just wierd or if this is normal.

If your fistula connects to the rectum, then fluid from the rectum builds up and leaks out the fistula track. The anus is closed but the fistula is an exit, so out it goes. I find this "open door" annoying because you can't keep gas in like non-fistula people. It wants out and so out the fistula it goes!
