CT Enterography Questions

I have googled and searched on this site about CT Enterographies.....and everyone contradicts each other!  Or can that many facilities administer the test that many different ways???

Has anyone had a CT Enterography lately?  And can you tell me what to expect?  I have one scheduled first thing Monday morning.

I had one about a year ago. In my case it was after a scope. I did it then because the doc wanted it, and he said if it didn't do it right away I'd have to prep again...I was alittle loopy so actually my husband decided that one for me.

I had to drink 3 large glasses of chilled liquid,  I was given 15 min to drink each one. It is thin, more like water, but it had that vaguely fruit-like taste that the SBFE barium has. I did not have a problem with it. Then I had the CT scan with IV contrast. They did 2 or 3 scans.

It does show a lot more. I had several "regular" CT scans and a SBFT, finally with the CT-E they were able to get a good idea of how much inflammation was going on and make a diagnosis.

I had one in April 07 and it was basically the same as mentioned above. I couldn't eat the night before. I went in and had an IV put in. I had to drink 3 containers of liquid which wasn't as bad as the barium stuff but still not "tasty". I had 10 mins to drink each container. On an empty stomach, I didn't do well with drinking the stuff. I can't normally drink large amounts of liquid in a short period so I only did 2 containers and told them I couldn't do any more. They talked to the radiologist who said to go ahead and do the scan anyways. They found "something metal" in my small intestine which turned out to be the camera pill I had swallowed in Feb. It was not picked up on anything else for whatever reason. The dye that they give you in the IV did make me feel alittle funny but otherwise it was quick and easy.

I was given a large (32 or maybe 48oz?) cup of "water" to drink. It's like the same size as the largest size drink you can get at a movie theater. It had something mixed in it and just tasted like stale water. It wasn't gross or anything. I was allowed to pee during this time if I wanted, and I did.

I was feeling nauseous for a few days before this exam so I took my time drinking it. They told me I had an hour to drink the whole thing. They said just drink 1/4 of it every 15 minutes. Well it took me like an hour and 20 min or so but I got most of it down.

Then you go into a room and get an IV, the machine spins around you and takes some scans. Then you get the IV injection everyone here is talking about that makes it feel like you're peeing yourself. lol. The radiologist administering it told me "this will give you a warm feeling that starts at your head and moves down your body. For some people it travels all the way to their feet. For other people it stops in their groin and they feel like they're peeing themselves, but don't worry, you're not actually peeing yourself."

It's a strange sensation but it goes away after 30 seconds or so.

Then you get some more scans taken, and then you're done.

It's not too bad.

Good luck and I hope everything turns out great. That is also the reason I had my enterography done...to see if I could get pregnant. The colonoscopy and endoscopy I had done didn't show the middle most part of my colon which was where I was having problems. I still haven't heard from my GI but I assuming no news is good news! Can't wait for us to journey through this together!
